Need help right now! Read more to discover how inept I really am with computers.[More:]

Okay, so our computer guy recently changed our work computers to be hosted remotely. Thing is, he didn't make clear with WHOM, and when I called his number to find out this vital information, his voice mail message said he was out of town until the 15th. (Nevermind what I would do if the server blew up and couldn't get hold of him. What an asshole dink.)

What I want to do: tell my boss how to check her work email from home.

How can I find out how to do this? Is there someplace on my machine I haven't found yet that would give me the pertinent information?

I feel lame for not immediately knowing how to do this, but there you go. Please hope me.
Go into the "email account set up" on her office computer and see what servers are set up right now- it might give you a clue.

Where would I find that? Inept, I'm telling you.

What email program do you use? Outlook? which version? In Outlook: Look for the "Tools" menu, then look for the "Account Settings" option. You ought to be able to dope out the name of the mail server from there.

But it also may be that you needn't do all that, and the name that you find might not be the appropriate name to use in any case. What happens if you try website names like "mail.mycompany.mumble" or "webmail.mycompany.etc." or "owa.mycompany.get.the.picture"

You can also try looking yourself up in the phonebook - you want to do a DNS search on your domainname, searching for the MX record for your domain. Copy the following url into a browser, edit "CHANGE.ME" to taste, and then click go:

What she needs to do is access the server from home in exactly the same way as she does in the office. The key will be in the network settings, I think, but I can't help any more than that without more info (and there will no doubt be someone along shortly who can do a much better job).

How do you log into your PC at work? Do you use a remote client like Citrix? Do you get a normal WinXP login screen? Do you get a Novell login screen? These are some of the questions you will need to be able to answer.

That's a lot of typing for being no help whatsoever - sorry

That's where I looked first, Triode, to no avail. The searchy thing gave me our IP address, but that's all.

Normal log in screen, nothing complicated.

Wait! I got it. I called up our old company and they had our new guys.

Man, our computer guy is lame. We pay him because I don't know how to DO this stuff.

Thanks, guys. Now, let us never speak of this again.
