Does anyone remember hearing Daniel Pinkwater on NPR saying he had lost weight by avoiding the 'white' foods: sugar, bread, and potatoes? This was maybe 2 or 3 years ago.[More:]I'd found the comment kind of inspirational. But recently I watched the public television show on Fat, and saw that he was really quite obese (not that there's anything wrong with that). It made me wonder if I'd really heard him saying that on the radio. Does anyone remember hearing it?
There's an interview with him here where he talks about having lost 100lbs in the 70s by eating only thrice-washed rice (!) but I didn't read to the end as I feared I would lose my eyesight. You will understand what I mean if you click the link - SFW, btw.

DarkForest, maybe this is what you're looking for:

It really does work. I made that comment earlier today, oddly enough.

Thanks, LoriFLA, that's exactly it. I guess I only remembered the part about him losing weight, not the part about how he's still pretty heavy.

iconomy: yes, it was that thread that made me think of it again today.

After skimming through this book, (conclusions here), I've decided to try to eliminate those white devil foods from my diet as well (despite being a total treat freak).

I pretty much have switched over to all whole-grain products now. It was easy, because I actually think they taste better -- they have more flavor and texture. The only frustrations are that not all the pasta shapes I like come in whole-wheat varieties. Also, convenience foods haven't caught up yet. I wish Fantastic Foods made more of their pilaf and couscous mixes and such with whole-grain flours and rices.

DarkForest, what kinds of treats do you freak over?

Well, um, for instance, um, right now, I'm finishing off the remnants of birthday apple pie. But really, I'm going low carb tomorrow! This was special, because our apple tree produced good apples for the first time this year, so my SO made a nice apple pie for my birthday.

Also love:
- chocolate chip cookies in almost any form (home made tollhouse, chips ahoy, the nice ones at a nearby cafe).
- donuts if they're halfway decent (see my metafilter thread about breaking up with dunkin donuts)
- coffee with cream and sugar - 3 of those sugar packets in a cup, please.
- eclairs, turnovers
- my main memory of 2 days in Paris were all the pastries I got to sample.
- pancakes and syrup (and the syrup gets on the little sausages too).
- Used to love some candy bars and m&ms, but I can't handle them anymore at all.

So you see, there's really no limit. I need to give them up though (or at least mostly), even if not for weight. They just affect my mood too much...

Yes, the mood-affecting! Do you get really lethargic afterwards as well? That's one of the main reasons I decided to give up starch. Ugh...the afternoon drowsies. Damn, you really like doughy stuff and sugar together. You probably love funnel cake too huh. Or as my son calls it, carnival cake.

Oh, and happy birthday?

Sugar, dough, and caffeine. Together they're sooo good. But for me, lately at least, they often lead to drowsiness, irritability, anxiety, increasing with dose. Of course, its taken me years to make the connection.

Thank you. I'm now a member of the fifty two set.

Happy birthday, DarkForest! My favourite birthday dessert is Tarte Tatin. Apples and caramelized sugar: how can you go wrong? Well, I'll tell you: it may have something to do with the 26 tbsp of butter. I've decided not to care, though.

Sounds great! I'd go for it.

It's totally allowed on your birthday! At least it's not trans-fat. I never believed that butter-is-bad-for-you stuff.

I lost 70 lb. on a low carb diet. Then I gained half of it back, but I'm still 35 lb. lighter than I used to be. I used the South Beach Diet, by the way. My before and after:
