Dear God. I'm a close friend of a close friend of this guy. Saw his work some months ago at an art show over towards Todmorden. Now, he's "on the run" and famous and my friend's getting calls from the Daily Mail about him. It is indeed a small world. (And here's his website which was designed and built by a guy I used to know really well.)
I loved this story. I'd be thrilled to find a carved stone head on my doorstep.

Publicity stunt? They're cool... was this just his way of getting his work noticed?

Very groovy indeedy - like a 3d Banksy! He's still my favorite phantom (though not so phantom anymore) artist.

I love the phrase "frightened villagers." One step below "terrified villagers."

I think it's great too!

(Chewy, I'm 90% sure I've read that the second photo you linked to is a fake. It even looks staged too. But I digress)

If I had the same skills as that artist, I would carve the stone heads and then leave them in different areas in the woods. That'd be amazing to come across, I think.
