This just can't be good. It might force me to be away for a while. The 8s are flashing in that pic, btw, OhNoes, omfg, *sniffle*, lol. Hope me? Is there hope? Or is it oktks ttfn?
;-) [More:]

Why is that error message written in, like, l33t h4x0r speak? And has smiley faces? Has I been hax0red/p0wnzEd?

Do you ever just really dig defragging? Like, you watch your 'puter defrag, you think it's cool how all those little red and blue lines move from the right to the left, you love seeing all that free white area expand, and when it's done you say, "OMFG, my 'puter is SOOO defragged!" ? "Look at all that space!" ?

Well, I moved gigs-n-gigs of files off my old beast onto a cool 500GB desktop drive (due to low space on the hard drive and to back up my files), then I defragged like there's no tomorrow.

Now when I start up the 'puter I hit the start button once, the machine makes some noise but doesn't start, then I turn it off at the back and start again with the front button and the 'puter starts.

Today it has restarted of its own free will at least twice in the last hour.

Time for me to buy a new magical portal to the Intarwebs?

Ghaaaah.

That should just be my sig, no? "Ghaaaah."
;-)
Here, I managed to decypher the message (which is not l33tsp34k, by the way, it's simply random gibberish): "Windows would not start because the following is missing or corrupt: \system32\ntoskrnl.exe Please re-install a copy of the above file." You can find a ton of information about this if you search Google for "ntoskrnl.exe".

If that's your magical portal to the Intarwebs, then how are you communicating with us now? This day just gets weirder and weirder.

A part of me exists purely in cyberspace. It certainly should exist there, by now.

I've read a lot of William Gibson novels. Live and learn.

Or else I'm getting error mssgs but I'm still functional in-between them.
;-)

Thanks, Dan'l.

Do you have your OS CD handy? Good.

1. Insert the Microsoft Windows XP CD. Note: If you have a recovery CD or a restore CD and not a Microsoft Windows XP CD it is likely the below steps will not resolve your issue.
2. Reboot the computer, as the computer is starting you should see a message to press any key to boot from the CD. When you see this message press any key.
3. In the Microsoft Windows XP setup menu press the R key to enter the recovery console.
4. Select the operating system you wish to fix, and then enter the administrator password.
5. Once at the recovery console type chkdsk /r
6. Once completed type exit and see if issue is resolved.

Ghaaah. Someone worked on my computer a couple years back and I let him go ahead and install a new OS while I was at it. He said he reset the admin password to "password." But "password" doesn't work.

Ghaaah.

You can reset the admin password by making a boot disk that runs a tiny distro of Linux and has all of the required software built in.

I *think* it was this one:

I'll try that first thing in the a.m., spiderskull. Thanks. Being without the Intarwebs feels like being Dr. Who with a broken down Tardis. Fuxored.
