I don't see the condescension, to be honest. Just a judge trying (straining?) to add a touch of humor to the otherwise joyless proceedings of a petty court case. It would be one thing if he gave this spiel before sending the guy up the river for the next 5-10 years, but the guy got probation and a fine, so I don't see the harm in it. Having recently sat on a jury, I know how boring these things can be, so I don't begrudge the judge this little bit of fun.
