20 September 2007

It's an mp3 party, woo woo! Upload something, download something, or just pop in, say hello and eat some of these delicious hors d'ouevres.
El Michels Affair - Walk on By (Sorry, Isaac Hayes--this is the funkiest 'Walk on By' ever recorded.)
posted by box 20 September | 09:26
Lazy Lester - You're Gonna Ruin Me, Baby (This swamp blues harmonica player's 'I'm a Lover Not a Fighter' was covered by The Kinks.)
posted by box 20 September | 09:31
Letta Mbulu - Sexwaxwa (South African soul music)
posted by box 20 September | 09:33
Promise - I'm Not Ready For Love ('60s kid soul)
posted by box 20 September | 09:42
De La Soul - Ring Ring (Ha Ha Hey) (Conley's Decision) (12" remix of one of my favorite De La songs)
posted by box 20 September | 09:48
Last Exit - Fire Drum (I'd call it jazz, but Chuck Eddy calls Iron Path, the album on which this song appears, one of the best 500 heavy metal albums ever made.)
posted by box 20 September | 09:58
Dan Le Sac vs Scroobius Pip - Thou Shalt Always Kill I heard this on KEXP last night and thought the lyrics were very clever.
posted by matildaben 20 September | 10:07
Spiral - Chase the Wind an 11 minute MEGAJAM (my friend from that post below? This was his first band, back when he was a percussionist. The guy who wrote this song is the lead singer in my friend's new band. Spiral was a great bar/jam band. This song is quite possibly one of the most uplifting and fun songs I've ever heard, and never failed to get the kids out on the floor and jumping all around like kids do)

Have you not heard / seen Thou Shalt Always Filter?
posted by chuckdarwin 20 September | 10:12
Hiya, bean! Hiya, WolfDaddy! Great to see you.

Henry Threadgill Sextett - The Devil Is On The Loose And Dancing With A Monkey (one of my favorite living jazz composers)
posted by box 20 September | 10:15
Want More Need Less by Curve. My very favoritest band ever; in my head on a good day, I'm Toni Halliday, or at least that cool

The W.A.N.D.

We've got the power now, motherfuckers; that's where it belongs
posted by chuckdarwin 20 September | 10:23
chuck, what's the good word? And crush--I'm so happy you could come out. Great dress. Here, try this black bean and roasted garlic hummus.

Mercury Dance Band - Envy No Good (Funky, funky Africa)
posted by box 20 September | 10:27
Mmmmm, hummus.

The Coinop Revenge - Simon Says (another friend of mine, this is a short, trippy little song. That tinkly piano line that anchors the song really haunts me, and keeps me from laughing out loud during the line "she wants pizza and extra Ativan")
posted by WolfDaddy 20 September | 10:31
The Seedy Seeds - The Little Patton (indie--not my usual thing, but I love this song)
Infamous Menagerie - Immediate Impound Zone (ditto)
posted by box 20 September | 10:39
I'm Looking For a Girl With a Washing Machine, by my friend Stefan and his band "Big Sleep". (Here's a page with info about his latest thing, "White Room")
posted by taz 20 September | 11:25
The good word is: rawk. I'm going to play music all evening.
posted by chuckdarwin 20 September | 11:28
Awesome. Have you tried these miniature cupcakes? I can't decide what I think of them--too cutesy-poo? And what about the cake-to-frosting ratio?

Stevie Wonder - Uptight (Everything's Alright) (more kid soul--Stevie was 16 when this was released)

Fieldwork - Infogee Dub (jazz trio featuring pianist Vijay Iyer)
posted by box 20 September | 11:48
Continuing the theme of music from people I actually know, here's Self - (You're So) Deadly. For me, Matt's music is right up there with Beck as far as fun, originality and eclectic-ness. Indeed, Matt's toured with Beck on numerous occasions. His more recent effort, called Wired All Wrong, isn't as free with their music as Self was, but here's my favorite song by this gourp, called "You're Freaking Me Out, Girl". It's just wild. Give it a listen.

Chuckdarwin - oops, no, I don't really read the Blue. Oh well.

Some jazzy Ethiopian music: Tezeta by Mulatu Astatqé; Ewnet Yet Lagegnesh by Bahta Gebre-Heywet; and Muziqawi Silt by the Wallias Band. All taken from this fine 2CD set.
posted by misteraitch 20 September | 12:12
Cecil Taylor (w/Sunny Murray and Jimmy Lyons) - What's New (more trio jazz--a live recording from 1962, and a good example of Taylor's move from traditional jazz into his mature style)

Matthew Shipp Trio (w/William Parker and Susie Ibarra) - Autumn Leaves (another jazz trio, featuring some of my favorite current jazz musicians, playing a 1997 take on the standard)

CAN I MAKES CD? YES, YES I CANS! Thanks everybody! MOAR! MOAR! MOOOOOAAAAARRRR!!!!

I'm digging the Self tune... Beckish, but not in a bad way.

I'm not much of a cupcake person, sadly.

Here's one y'all might not know:

Sinner - Neil Finn

One morear from me. Another one from The Coinop Revenge - Go Your Own Way. QUEER RAWK!

Awesome song/video there

Mongo Santamaria - Sweet Tater Pie (Afro-Cuban jazz from the legendary conguero)

The Budos Band - His Girl (kind of a Temptations cover, from NYC Afro-soul revivalists)

Kenny and the Beach Boys - The Big Payback ('60s Bahamian showband covers the James Brown burner)

Food for my Soul and Pop’s Bag by The Dragons.

matildaben - it's brilliant. Music here and the video is here.

Oh I've been having such fun dancing and swilling the champagne, here is another lush woman singing: Elysian Fields, "Jack in the Box".
posted by crush-onastick 20 September | 14:47
Crush, I love Elysian Fields!!!! OMG!1!!
posted by tr33hggr 20 September | 14:54
tr33hggr: I saw them in a hole in the wall in DC, 2-3 years ago, when they opened for some shitty local band. Sat next to Jennifer Charles' father, who was the only other person in the room listening to them. Got to chat with her & Oren for about twenty minutes. I made a complete ass of myself, but she is so much more lush in person.

Here’s a track from Neil Young’s unreleased album Chrome Dreams (not to be confused with Chrome Dreams II, which is scheduled to drop October 23). This is a studio recording of “Stringman”; the only official release of the song was on the MTV Unplugged album.

If that don’t work for ya, how’s about some Memphis jazz piano, courtesy of Phineas Newborn, Jr. ? Here’s his version of “Well You Needn’t”.
