I had the pleasure of arriving at work early this morning to field a conference call with a counterpart in Manila. He was there late (eightish?) and I was here early (eightish?) and since neither of us wanted to prolong the agony, it all went quite smoothly.[More:]

It's nice to have calls like that. North American businesses always schedule conference calls to be midafternoon timewasters, and man alive, do I get sleepy during them.
When I've worked on international scientific projects they are usually set for 8 California time, which means it's mid-afternoon for no one. Unless you're somewhere ridiculous like Saint Pierre and Miquelon or Greenland. Or south of the equator (who does that, really)?

The other thing that was so great about this conference call: because of the hour, there was just the two of us, so nobody to unnecessarily extended the call with redundant questions (also, there were plenty of opportunities for seeing and hearing crystal raindrops fall, making flowers grow, building castles in the sky, and making it if we try).

I guess you can hardly call that a conference call, really. Just a "call," or maybe a "phone call." Or maybe a "dial-in meeting," (a neologism that, like many I run into in the office, I hate with a molten passion).

Hey, how'd that "to" get in there? Get out of there, you two-lettered fiend!

I now have regular 4 or 5 am conference calls with people overseas. It gets old real fast, lemme tell you :-(
