Goodbye My Almost Lover I've been thinking this past year and a half or so about songs that express sentiments I haven't heard musically expressed before. Here is one. Anyone have others to share?
Sentiments. Ok. Some of these aren't really for everyone, but they really haven't been expressed musically before. Naturally, some may find two of the following tracks offensive in various ways. Life's like that.
When the lights go on again all over the world
And the ships will sail again all over the world
Then we'll have time for things like wedding rings and free hearts will sing
When the lights go on again all over the world
When the lights go on again all over the world
Notes
Peaked at # 1 in 1943
Competing version by Lucky Millinder hit # 12
Title song from the 1944 film.
This was a mid-WW2 song. *Title* refers to the practise of having to black out possible bombing targets and to avoid back-lighting torpedo targets for offshore U-boats.
Lyrics:
This is Jordan, we do what we like
This is Jordan, we do what we like
Stay with me, my five year old
Stay with me, play hide and seek
Stay with me, my five year old
This is Jordan, we do what we like
And this will stay with you until you die
And this will stay with you until you die
And I will stay with you until you die
And this is Jordan, we do what we like
And this will stay with you until you die
And this will stay with you until you die
This will stay with you until you die
And I will stay with you until you die
Suck daddy, suck daddy, suck daddy, etc
Throbbing Gristle - Hamburger Lady Lyrics:
By far worse is the hambuger lady,
We must heal them for the qualified technicians,
Worse,
Alternating nights are automatic,
She's lying there,
Hamburger Lady
Hamburger Lady
She's dying,
She is burned from the waist up,
On her arm,
Her ear is burned,
Her eyelashes are burned,
She can't hold anything up,
And even with medical advances,
There's no end in sight,
For hamburger lady,
She wants me to tell you of her claim mind,
From which the double play laying,
The propping chair,
Leave her,
She's Burned from the waist down,
Has to eat her life through tubes,
And the nice nurse,
Hamburger Lady
Hamburger Lady
She's okay if you change the tubes,
Tubes in her legs,
The tubes in her arms,
She's okay,
Then it came out and saw the burn nurses,
Indeed in the account of killing,
And it flashed on the carpet,
And it flashed on the floor,
The hamburger lady,
She's been here for three weeks,
She came to rest,
Because of the burn she needs relief,
Kneel down,
The qualified Technician,
Keeps her alive,
Oh, and I also wish I had a copy of Roxy Music's "In Every Dream Home a Heartache", which is a love song to a blow-up doll 'I blew up your body/but you blew my mind!', but I don't, alas.
Also, on one of their albums, "The Feeding of the 5000", CRASS originally had a "song" (more of a rant) called 'Reality Asylum', which was a blistering condemnation of christianity ("There are no words for my contempt"). On subsequent releases, this was replaced with two minutes of silence entitled "The Sound of Free Speech", as workers at the pressing plant allegedly refused to handle the single.
