To be fair, Nick Drake didn't actually sell out - he was dead long before that commercial was ever even pitched.

True, but he was a good starting point for the phenomenon of "unknown artists showing up in ads and becoming popular and/or alienating existing fans," and probably the first one that people really noticed. Plus, it helped round the set out to two hours.
