I'd heard that the backwards peace sign, show 'em your two fingers, was from some medieval war or another where the victors chopped those two fingers off the hands of the vanquished to make them ineffective archers, and therefore powerless. From then on the fingered people showed theirs off, even as a taunt by future generations.
