yeah I always am a bit flummoxed that Joe checked out so early and Shane is still kicking. When I saw the Pogues in Chi town this past spring they where playing some Strummer on the PA prior to the show.

While I'm sure that they didn't do him any good, Joe actually died of a congenital heart defect.

There's a funny moment in The Future Is Unwritten where Joe says something to the effect of "since most of the greatest inventions known to man were created by smokers, those who don't smoke shouldn't be allowed to use them". I think that got the biggest laugh of the night.

Heh. The irony is that he was actually living healthy (or at least somewhat) at the end there -- a friend of my sister's used to run marathons with him in those last few years. (Insert obligatory Jim Fixx joke here.)
