How do you sign off on e-mails? [More:]This may sound silly, but when I send e-mails I tend to treat them as regular letters, with a heading and all. With family and very close friends I sign "Love" before my name. But with friends, and especially Mecha friends, "Love" can sound a bit too much (even though I love all of you anyway). "Regards" sounds prissy, "Sincerely" isn't enough. So what do you all do?
cheers,
chewie

Talk soon, Lori. Or just, Lori.

"Talk soon" is sort of odd, but I will soon be talking with them.

One of my friends uses her initials.

I made reservations at Magnolia for 6:30. See you then.

RBA

I like the initial thing.

(also, whenever I email MeFites for the first time, they always seem surprised that the 'mc' is just the first two letters of my last name. I guess they thought it was some secret code)

Depends on the sitch. For the most part, I do

Cheers!

I don't know why, it just kind of happened. More formal situations typically get a polite 'have a nice day/week/weekend/whatever'.

Work (to external people or people I don't know well):
[my name]

[unit name]
Department of x, x and x
P: 07-xxxx xxxx
M: 0411-xxx xxx
F: 07-xxxx xxxx

please note change of e-mail address to myname@xxx.xxx.gov.au (this because our department name, therefore e-mail addresses, have changed and the grace period where both will work is almost up)

Please consider the environment before printing this email (this used to have a little tree beside it, but I took it off when I found that people who convert messages to plan text end up with a P instead, which looked silly)

Sometimes nothing if it's a conversation by email, mostly just my name or first initial if you're extra special (though few are). If it's a request then usually something like "Thanks again, Megan". I have a school one with my lab contact info and position that goes on school/TA related stuff. It depends on the mood and I'm a moody, capricious person so whatever I feel like at that moment.

Remember that scene from Smokey and the Bandit that begins with a wall of beer cans, then there's a LOUD-ASS burp and the beer cans fall away to reveal a hung-over Burt Reynolds?

I have that at the end of all my e-mails.

It really depends to whom I am sending the email.

To my mother:
"Love you!"

To my siblings or close friends: I don't sign off, actually. These are the people whose homes I just walk in to without knocking.

Other personal emails:
Valette

Professional emails (to coworkers):
Thanks!
Valette

Other professional emails get the full name, title, organization, number, and fax.

I usually say "cheers" or something similar and let my .sig do the rest. I have 500-odd weird sayings that change every 3 minutes with an ascii art 'logo' spelling out dabitch. Course, this is wasted on anyone who doesn't have a monospaced font in their email-reader, which is 70% of the people I mail, I'm guessing.

Depends on the person, and the mood of the email. If it deserves a "love", then I put in a Love, Hadjiboy. If it deserves a hug, then I put in a hug. Varies from email to email.

I don't, normally. I tend to view e-mail more as a conversation than a series of letters. But my grandparents tend to be formal ("Dear rossi"), so they get a "Much love, rossi" at the end. My business correspondence always tends to have a "Thanks for the opportunity" line in it somewhere, so I sign off with a "Thanks again, rossi."

With friends, I also like to throw in the occasional odd sign-offs like "Hee Haw, Sam Wainwright" or "Word to Your Mother!" or "Keep on Truckin'!"

I don't use a sign-off like "best wishes" or anything at work; it seems to informal for the technical emails I usually send. Sometimes, I'll use "Thanks," before my sig, but that's it.
posted by muddgirl 26 July | 10:51
In the office it's a great long sig that has name, title, address, phone, fax.

For personal emails I'll just sign it Jan, or if I'm corresponding with someone I know well, I often don't add a sig at all, or I'll use this, which is so like me I could've modelled for it.
