Hey jonmc, do you know about divshare? A few people around here use it for their mp3 links. I like it better because I can play the song right from the website w/o having to download it (and you can still download it, of course). Anyway, just a self-interested suggestion.

Thanks for the song.

I like YSI. Others, like senduit, automatically start the file to load once you reach the page. I don't like that.

Often, the song offered is a surprise (title not listed) and when I click the page to see what it is, the download has already started, and more often than not, I did not want the song.

I don't like web sites that decide you are getting the file downloaded regardless of if you actually wanted it or not.

FYI: My personal preferences > gettoffmylawn's personal preferences. kthxbi.

Also, divshare doesn't appear to do what you're talking about, goml.

I'm done guessing. No more damn quiz shows for me.

Um, did anybody actually listen to the song?
posted by jonmc 23 July | 16:58
NOT ME! But dammit, I woulda if I coulda, all gripes about disclosure aside. I'm sure if I had known what song it was, I'd have had something to say, if I'd heard it before. So yeah, no, I didn't listen, and no, yeah, I wish I could.

What song is it?

It's 'Old Man Bar,' by the Iron City Houserockers. A beautiful song and a real weeper.

And um, mullac... I never wrote that it did. I wrote "Others, like senduit"

And, I did not listen to the song yet Jon, almost everything is banned on my work computer... I just wanted to encourage you to keep using YSI even if just to hear Mullac bitch about it.

Calm down, getoffmylawn. My intention was to point out divshare as a friendly suggestion. Yeah, I made a jokey response about personal preference, but my next comment wasn't meant as a correction to anything you said. I was, again, just pointing out the benefits of that website (it doesn't auto-download and it plays media).

Seeing as the whole discussion has been derailed, I thought I would throw in my 2c worth - I never listen to the songs that you post, jomnc, because I never know what they are and being at work means I have to be careful about how much bandwidth I use ("limited personal use" is OK, but I already stretch that quite a bit a shitload). If you stated what the song was, I would probably listen to at least half of them and gain some new music into the bargain. Currently, we both lose. If you gave the details, you lose the element of surprise or something and I gain exposure to some new stuff. Your thread, your choice - just thought I would share.

Well, that's encouraging. I'll be in the yard eating worms.

Yeah, way to quote me out of context, jon.

Another vote for divshare here. It's nice to be able to preview before downloading, in case I've already got the track. Also, when you upload, it keeps trcak of how many time your files is downloaded, which is kinda fun.

You're very generous with your music, jon, but I have to agree that a little ID of files when you post them would be helpful.

As for the Houserockers, I haven't heard them in about 20 or so years but I recall digging 'em back in the day. I'll grab the track to night when I get home. Thanks.

Well, at the same time, the obscurity (or other factors) of them would cause a lot of people to ignore them. And they are usually identified at YSI.

I think you're selling people short, jon. People here are fairly eclectic in their musical taste. Plus, I know that there are folks who will download simply on your endorsement.

posted by bmarkey 23 July | 19:47
People are more likely to not download something more mainstream, because they either have it already or don't want it. Also, when there is no identification of any sort (an alt tag would give those who want it a clue without being obvious for those who like surprises), those of us in monitored environments are not going to click a link that may show up in a log at work as "bucket of cocks.mp3" because it's hard to justify that as work-related or as being appropriate to a work environment. Therefore, if I don't know what the file is, I ain't gonna click on it.

Yeah, yeah, shouldn't play with my unimaginary friends while I'm supposed to be working, blah blah blah.

I also like divshare better than YSI, and descriptions rather than no descriptions. Especially when the describer has something interesting to say about the song, which is often the case w/you, jon.

(And if you were reading somebody else's .mp3 post, I think you'd appreciate the detail. Dig it: The Iron City Houserockers were, as the name suggests, from Pittsburgh. Here's another song from the Rust Belt: 'When the World's At Peace,' by the O'Jays. Before they hooked up with Gamble and Huff, the O'Jays grew up in Canton, Ohio, and attended Canton McKinley High School, which also makes a cameo in a documentary called Go Tigers!. (McKinley's in downtown Canton, while GlenOak, which counts Marilyn Manson among its alums, is more suburban.))

I do like the divshare preview option a lot, myself.
