That was a big well outfitted house in it's day. Sad to see it so forlorn.

I love old houses. They have so much character, history, and stories in them. Is your uncle going to restore the house or is it too far gone? It looked like a lot of work, but possible to fix up, to me. Or maybe it's just because I love love love old homes.

That was really interesting, Doohickie! I particularly liked the picture of the aunts' room. I had no idea that Nixon was ever a pin-up.

I'm with redvixen. I love old houses and that one seems really cool.

Here's the thing: The house has a lot of sentimental value for the family, particularly Uncle Herb, as it's the only house he'd ever lived in, until he moved into a trailer home in 2005. He plans on building a new home, but the city won't approve it, particularly while the old house is still standing (and even then, he may not be able to rebuild because the homestead actually lies within the boundaries of a national park).

So he's taking his time, slowly cleaning the place out, trying to decide whether to try to build new, or to restore the old home, which he probably cannot afford to do on his pension. The family, though attached to the home, doesn't have the extra resources to sink into its restoration.

I relish in the home while it stands, knowing its days are probably numbered. I'm glad I took the pictures, and would like to take more if I get a chance. I didn't take any of the front living areas.... which I somehow didn't realize until I got home and looked at the pictures I took.

Anyway, I thought I would share.... I would have loved to see the home when my mother-in-law was a young girl; I bet it really was something in its day.

Oh, wow. Neat house, Doohickie! I hope the structure is sound and it can be fixed up, but man, that's gonna take a lot of money and sweat.

[Whoops, didn't preview.]

We all kind of hope that, but it's not very realistic. Still.... as long as it stands, it stands, baby!
