01 July 2007

How are you spending Sunday? [More:]It's another cold, windy day here, with intermittent showers. I spent yesterday setting up my new computer, which is great.

Today I need to go to the supermarket, fill up the car, go to the gym, do a ton of housework (this place looks like burglars have ransacked it) and then do some work which I was meant to have done on Friday.

I have to listen to a recording of a phone call from a madwoman who believes that MI5 arranged for her local bank manager to murder her mother in retaliation for her father having been a conscientious objector during WW2. I really do not want to do this today but I must.
I am working and simply counting down the days to July 28.

We'll be celebrating the anniversary of the end of the bloodbath we call the fight for Canada's independance. Yes, many a good man fell to end the tyrannical reign of those awwwful Brits.

Oh. Um, those constitutional conferences must have been tough though. It was probabably hot, and this was before the days of air conditioning. And everyone wore fancy suits and stuff.

We'll be going for breakfast soon, and then to friends' for a barbeque.

It's my brother's birthday. I'm baking a chocolate cake, which he'll enjoy immensely, and wash down with a gallon of milk, in one sitting, if I'd let him. That boy can eat cake!

I’m at home. I’ve walked the dog. I’ve had breakfast, and ice-cream for lunch. I’ve read a few chapters of Roberto Calasso’s The Ruin of Kasch.

I’m slow-cooking a fillet of wild boar in some cider, with onions & porcini mushrooms. This’ll be just for me, as my wife won’t eat non-regular pigflesh, so later I’ll probably barbecue some burgers & hot dogs or something.

Happy Canada Day everyone!

I’ve visited two supermarkets, and have taken two bags full of glass bottles down to the recycling bins. I took a few photographs on my way to the second supermarket, only one of which turned out very well.

I just ordered the Adobe CS3 Design Standard Upgrade package.

Later I plan to clean up the kitchen some more, and to try my hand at making some more perfumes, natural perfumery being my current hobby-horse.

I slept in *late* (which for me means 7:30) and hence missed my yoga class. So instead I am idling around on the web and drinking coffee. Soon I will bike to the farmer's market; and the rest of the day will involve either industriously sorting out stuff to take to Goodwill (if I am self-disciplined), or else wandering around outdoors (because we are having the most spectacularly beautiful midsummer weather this weekend).

Going to the races! I have a hat and a frock. Well, I have a sundress that I like and sun hat that doesn't look too silly. And there will be horses! and booze. And Dad covers my bets, so.

Got up at 9, which is late for me, had breakfast and planted myself in front to the TV to watch annoying people talk about the Glasgow attack and the smoking ban that came into force in England today. Napped, woke up, made lunch (baguette with tomatoes; balsamic vinegar; hot mushrooms sauted in garlic, chili and smoked paprika and topped with mozzarella and lots of black pepper), napped. Need to put in a decent run this afternoon before heading to my parents for a meal this evening. Oh, and do laundry and all that other junk.

Good morning.

I stayed up late and didn't roll out of bed until 9:15. Husband and I watched a good chunk of Regular Lovers last night and will finish the movie today.

I'm doing the same old thing I do most every Sunday -- visiting my parents.

Yawn. It's only 7:15 here so far.

Today will be spent listening to the radio, napping, nibbling on leftovers intermittently, and going through heaps of books from college to see what stays and what goes.

*waves to celebratory Canadians thousands of miles away*

Well, I went downstairs and gave the octogenarian Greek lady the rent, so now we're watching Sunday Morning. Then the 'talking heads' shows come on and I'm not into any talking heads that aren't playing "Psycho Killer,' so Pips can watch those herself while I sit on the porch reading, listening to music and getting blotto. M*A*S*H is on at 10pm so that'll be cool, too.

I have tried several times to declutter the house. After one of the most intense weeks of my life in every sense I just can't seem to get around to it.
I keep getting distracted, funny that!
I did pop out to see the new interpretive centre at Battle Abbey up the road. I was impressed. I like to see visual representations of how battles are fought. I just don't get that from reading text. But that's just me.
We went to a Proms style thing last night which was like a cross with Glastonbury. Although no-one does the old Dunkirk spirit like the British. Despite weather which would have cancelled any other event in the circumstances, this was in aid of the local hospice so large numbers of people in Sou'westers and wellies turned up. I was in suede fuck-me boots. Not my finest moment sartorially speaking.
I'm going to spend the rest of the day trying to declutter the house. Oh, wasn't that where I came into this discussion, I keep getting.......

I am getting on a plane for Kona tomorrow at 6:40 am. I have not even STARTED to pack.

Went to daughter's showcase on Portland yesterday. For anyone interested, her band is going to be featured (as part of some coverage of the Girl's Rock and Roll Camp) this Friday on the Today Show. Three guys from NBC spent the week there and they chose Daughter's band to follow and film. I had to sign some releases. The producer seems very "taken" by my daughter, and hopes that "something happens for her" as a result of this coverage.

I have not idea what the "something" might be. So, yeah, shifting gears today and trying to get into the aloha mood.

I am in the process of planning... plans. It is a beautiful day here. Sunny and pleasantly cool and dry. I am sure things will change towards more humidity and heat as the day progresses and therefore my arrangements will have to adjust accordingly.

I would really like to take the kids to the Museum of Natural History, but I am assuming it will be very crowded and I do not feel like getting sardined today. Alternatively, there is Riverside park. We can get the balls and the rackets, the crayons and the bicycles and go for play and a picnic.

Although, I would really like to go the races with crush. In a sundress and some high heels and a fancy, extraordinary, ridiculous hat. I'd really love that!

*wow danf! congratulations for your daughter. And have a nice trip!

I've watered and pruned all of the plants in the yard that are less than 6 feet tall. I am currently eating left over pizza (I miss pizza - I've been on a diet for 4.5 months and couldn't take the lack of pizza any longer - ordered Aubree's last night!).

I have GOT to start the quilt that should have been completed for the baby shower I threw for my friend last weekend - I HAVE to get it done by the time the shower her family is throwing her comes around (7/21). Ugh. I have no motivation. I also have to go shopping for a memorial plant/tree for another friend that lost her sister last Tuesday and a garden type item for a coworker's housewarming party next weekend...

An old friend arrives today for a visit! He's simply one of my favorite people, but we haven't set eyes on each other in six years. He arrives this afternoon!

I've been prepping food - meze platter, frittata, biscuits - so I can throw together dinner while we catch up, and making coffeecake for the morning.

Very excited!

I was supposed to go and see the Song Festival, but as the result of some mishaps (nothing too serious, hopefully), I didn't go there. I'm also not celebrating my birthday. I spent the afternoon on a bus and now I'm at my girlfriend's place, too tired to do anything (maybe I'll go and buy some ice cream).

I slept in this Canada Day and woke up in time to catch the start of the 2nd of a 6 hour live, commercial-free(!) broadcast of the Concert for Diana. Nelly Furtado just performed and she was awesome. I'll probably be parked here in front of the TV for the next 4.5 hours watching, with breaks to snack here and there.

We're National Trust folks. We got up and went to Charlecote Park. Had a British Picnic (ate in the car whilst it rained) and then looked around the house and grounds.

After the rain let up, we played some Victorian-era games, and had tea & cakes.

Tonight, I'm going to play guitar and sing at Social Club, as per usual. Pints will be consumed. Smokers will smoke outside for the first time ever (It may be Canada Day, but here it's Day One of the Smoking Ban).

Tomorrow, I'll slip back into a coma for eight hours and act like I give a fuck about my job ;-)

Going to the Varsity for chili dogs and onion rings, then coming home and uploading to Flickr the rest of my pics from vacation. Hopefully going to see "Sicko" this evening.

I inadvertantly agreed to work today, so I'll be spending the next four hours monitoring a computer lab. Then, I'm going to M and J's house for dinner--potatoes from the CSA basket, spices from the garden, like that. We'll probably watch some of the Jazz Casual DVDs.

I wanted to go see Transformers, but it doesn't start until Tuesday for some stupid reason, so maybe I'll go see 28 Weeks Later or Spiderman 3, if I can get the energy up to trek out to Heterotown in Burnaby. After that is a bbq at a friend's place in the West End. Work on Monday, so it won't be a big night.
Listening to a new CD I got yesterday of early ska (1960's) which is very cool. Once DivShare is back up, I'll throw a coupla track on there, probably.

I am hoping to spend most of it out in the yard, doing nothing except reading relationship advice guides (for class) and Agatha Christies (for fun). I have a recipe for grilled chicken and polenta with a blackberry/mango salsa that I want to try out, and I may go crazy and try the mango, avocado, and raspberry salad recipe as a side.

I'm just that nuts!!!

Going to the hospital. Will spend a couple of hours there, reading to my stepdaughter while she's still in the coma. Hubby will come to hospital and switch off with me. Then, my four year old son and I will go down to my parents for school next week.

Well it's a bit late in the day, but here's how I've spent my Canada Day thus far:

-slept in very late and got up only out of a supreme sense of guilt for sleeping past noon so much lately.

-enjoyed a breakfast comprised of the remainder of delicious leftover dinner (egg noodles with zucchini, onions, tofu and broccoli in a black bean chili sauce).

-took a ridiculously long shower and gave myself a pedicure.

-went to the market to buy the whole wheat bread for my supper of tomato, cheese and avocado sandwiches.

-watched the Simpsons.

Later I'm going to go to some fireworks and have a drink with a friend who's going through some hard times.

Slept in. Got up. Futzed around on the web. Advised son on buying a type of hand drum. Had a nap.

This is the first day in almost four weeks when I haven't been either stricken with the plague, helping out my upstairs neighbour/friend who suffered a broken ankle a week ago, or dealing with family explosion/meltdown (brother on meth, etcetera). Now I'm going to the store and stopping off at the awesome burritos place for dinner. Then reading/writing for the evening. Sigh. Happy Canada Day, y'all.

I went to two movies playing at the Afro-punk festival at BAM and then had chicken and dumplings at a new midtown "comfort" food place with way too much attitude. Don't put me at the shitty table by the workstation with people constantly walking past if there are several banquette two-tops available. Still struggling with bronchitis. Steven Patrick was supposed to play last night but it was postponed. Rack the 4th up as another holiday where I wasn't invited anywhere (New Year's is the worst). I wish I were up in Cape Cod.
