Hope me: Stupid, simple 'puter question... [More:]

Bullet-pointed to be brief as possible:

*So, a friend of mine cobbled together my PC years ago out of pieces-parts at a trade show. I never paid much attention to what he did.

*Lately I get this error message often:

Low Disk Space

You are running very low on disk space on Local Disk (D:).
To free space on this drive by deleting old or unnecessary
files, click here...

*So I wonder how I could be so low and I look at My Computer and see THIS which indicates I have two Local Drives.

*(D:) says it has 37.2 GB used and 64 KB free. Can that be right!? Naw... (C:) says it has 4.48 MBs used and 3.36 MB free.

*Sure, I have Corell Draw, PhotoShop and PaintShop, but otherwise I don't have much in the way of programs. I have hundreds of large image files, though. No, they're not pron MPEGs & JPGs, just photos and art.

*Does it seem like I should be so low on space? Do you think I should make due for now with moving my docs to a cheap external drive that would also serve as a backup? I hate to spend $$ adding RAM to an old 'puter. Is my computer wonky?

Thanks...

I don't know why not. It depends on what you're storing. Image files can be pretty big, if you're storing bmp, tiff or psd files. It's also possible that there are some broken files in there taking up more space than they should. I'd have windows error check the disk and I'd have a look around on the disk to see how much is being stored in your image files...

I don't know why not.

Thanks.

I didn't think I had that much space on my whole 'puter...

I was just having a look and most of my scans and photos have BIG rez copies stored automatically by a program as well as manually by me.

Wow:

My Pictures = 2.01 GB even after I deleted tons of photos automatically stored by my camera.

Program Files = only 33 KB.

"Program Files = only 33 KB."

That doesn't seem right, if you've got stuff like photoshop on there. It should be higher.

"My Pictures = 2.01 Gb"

So I'm wondering where the other 30+ Gb is lurking.

I'd give windows error checking on that drive a shot. Is it Windows XP?

Also, backing up your data (if you haven't already) might be in order before you do anything else.

Um computer illiterate here but maybe the drive was partitioned originally?

XP, DarkForest. Thanks and sorry for the absence.

Partitioned! Wow, they can do that? Thanks, Wilder.

Computer's wonky, in'nt it?

I just remember way back in the day these messages that my memory was running out and it turned out it was common to partition the drives, don't know why. Hey maybe age is good for something, cackle cackle
