Live from the Apple Store, 5th Ave, NYC Decided to stop by to see how things are going. People are still buying and leaving with iPhones. 8 store employees are standing outside, and they cheer when anyone walks in or out. The crowds around the tables with the display iPhones are 3 deep.
they keep cheering every 10 seconds. a lot of people are buying iPhones.

Is this whole thing incredibly depressing to anyone else?

I think MySpace is blocked on Apple Store computers :-(

(I won the Legally Blonde CD today from one of the actorss in the show who does CD giveaway contests on MySpace- my Dad called me and told me, because he's also the guy's friend and saw the bulletion. I want to message him and be like WOO HOOO THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU SEND IT TO ME NOOOOOOW. Guess I'll have to wait until I get home, boo.)

Not moi, puke & cry, but I'm like a dementor- I feed off the energy of happy people. Except, uhh, I don't, like, eat their souls.

Your description of the employees gleefully cheering made me really want to firebomb my local applestores.

iMagine that.

I can just imagine the boss saying 'OK, you're on cheering duty,' or maybe some of them volunteered for it, which is even more depressing, somehow.

Those weren't those "Apple Geniuses" I've heard about, are they?

"Is this whole thing incredibly depressing to anyone else?"

Sure is p & c.

The cheering people were gone when we left the store :(

Hm, I'm starting to doubt their commitment to sparkle motion.

I did get to play with an iPhone before I left- even made a phone call with it.

"Dad, I'm on an iPhone!"
"You BOUGHT an iPhone?"

It's a different way to make a phone call- you don't hold it up to your face. I tried, but then realized, oh, duh, headphones. And the mic is on the cord. Despite being in a really loud store, I could hear very well, and my Dad could hear me, too.

"headphones. And the mic is on the cord"

Hasn't that been the cell phone standard since about 1993?
posted by arse_hat 29 June | 23:52
For people who use that sort of thing, I suppose- but don't all other cell phones have the option to hold it to your ear? As far as I could tell, the iPhone didn't.

Hm, I don't like that. I fear change.

Wow TPS, that is odd. With no tactile keypad I can't see the attraction.

Well IT IS Apple.

I was all ready to buy one, but I had to replace a lost phone while in SF and I think I'll be landing a job that comes with a blackberry soon. Anyway...

The cheering employees thing is awful. Didn't they learn from Cold Stone Creamery? Their employees will sing when someone leaves a $1+ tip, but it's so awkward that it keeps people from giving tips.

me too p & c. Sheeple. With gadgets. Keeping up with joneses that don't exist. /crabbiness

I for one welcome our new electronic overlords. This is the first gadgety gizmo I've ever come across that really made me crave. Of course, a phone that costs 500 simoleons is daunting.

I'm going to wait to see what the aftermath brings before handing over any serious moolah.

But it's so pretty....DOWN SIMBAH!

Yeah, it's pretty cool... I like the touchscreen. But people are always losing their phones. At $500 a pop, that would really be ouchy.

oh. Heh. I just realized that with iphone, you have to use their carrier service (AT&T; I haven't been paying that much attention, obviously). Wow. Yeah, I don't think I'd ever pay for a phone that limited me to a single provider. How is this a good idea?

From what I have seen, the iPhone is the perfect device for me - looks after my music, phone and organisation needs all in one. But I can't buy one here and probably wouldn't anyway, because I always get free phones, so would find it hard to justify the cost (to other people, if not to myself ;-).

It does look way sexy, though. I think I hear it calling me ...
