Please talk me down from my peak of crankiness. Family strikes once again, and I am cranky. [More:]

My partner's family has been planning a family getaway at their beach house for
late July. The Fella, normally a bit of a stay-at-home, put in for vacation several months ago so we could join in the festivities.

I just got an email rescheduling the family's visit. For next week. That is, starting this weekend.

We can't go*.

I'm so sad for him. He's had a hard month, and he's been soothing himself with the thought of this getaway, puttering around, walking to the beach, playing with his adorable niece, catching up with his brother. And now it's off.

We're having a houseguest for one of the two days The Fella has off next week. So we might swing one harried day at the beach house, but not the leisurely vacation he needs. He'll be heartbroken.
Elsa, that sucks. Sorry.

Could you plan a vacation for his time already scheduled off with just the two of you?

What? That's so crappy! Nothing pisses me off more than short notice. How hard is it to make a plan in advance and stick to it?

You and the fella have my sympathies.

Thank you, bunnies! Thank you for letting me vent this anger. My closest friend recently moved to Australia; now she's awake while I'm asleep, and vice versa, so our normal sense of being connected at the hip via email has left me floating and unconnected.

Ugh. Sorry, sweetie!

I really try (by main force, if necessary!) to keep serious holidays separate from family stuff as much as possible... for so many reasons.

I totally understand.

But! Assuming he's going to have a holiday, and that you two will spend it (or most of it) together, you can make it wonderful for him, I think - even if he spends the whole time at home. Cooking, playing, kissing, tickling, laughing - that's a sweet holiday, whatever the circumstances, for both of you. And next time, maybe you can guide it to be something other than a family thing. Yeah, I know - probably not; but one can try. :)

*breathes deeply*

I walked away from Keyboard of Rage, made iced coffee and a berry smoothie, and tried to think of inexpensive creative ways to spend our week off together.

And all the while I thought how lucky I am to have a safe place to vent my anger and frustration, so I don't stomp around with it all day and dump it on The Fella along with the sad re-scheduling news at the end of the day. Thanks, bunnies.

(His family is lovely, and I like them. But this will deeply hurt his feelings, and right now I AM ANGRY at them for that. )

taz, that thought goes straight to my heart, because that describes a normal day chez nous. Yes, I know how lucky we are. Paradoxically, when the quotidian life of the heart is so achingly sweet, it's hard to envision a way to make it special.

ah... well, it's really and truly not a big deal then. You guys have something special going on every day, which is excellent. Carry on!

Oh, that sucks. Sorry to hear about it.

Could it be blessing in disguise? I know some people are incredibly attached to their families, but family can also bring its own set of stressors -- maybe this is the universe's way of telling your fella that he just needs some relaxing obligation-free time off . . . ?
