Ask MeCha: are slugs harmful?[More:]So I live in a Victorian house, and its cellar has been converted into an office, and has been 'dry-lined' (I think that's what it's called - the previous owners left details of what's been done). I work in the basement, which is generally pretty awesome, especially in hot weather.

Recently I've noticed slug trails on the rug in the basement in the mornings - sometimes new ones appear, probably 2-3 times per week. I've never yet seen a slug down here.

My question is: should I be trying to get rid of them? I can't even work out how they're getting in - there's a ventilation shaft from the garden, and a hatch through to the other half of the cellar which is full of hard-core and not dry-lined, and a small gap to the outside next to the stairs down to the cellar.

They're not causing me any inconvenience apart from a slight 'ewww' factor - could they be causing damage I don't know about?
Pests.

I know I shouldn't, but it always makes me laugh when Bailey (cat) comes in from a little jaunt in the forest and ends up with a little slug stuck to her belly. It completely squicks her out and she always runs in with this "GET IT OFF ME NOW!!!" look on her face so I have to roll her over and find the slug hiding in her tummy fur.

No, they are not harmful to your house or you, only your lettuce. Leave 'em be.

Jan, that is very funny!

If you decide to control them, Sluggo does work, and is safe around pets - organic. As it was explained to me, it's essentially iron oxide, which is toxic to the slug. The slug eats it, crawls back home, and dies there so you have the added bonus of no clean-up.

Yes, I realize the incongruence extant in a vegetarian giving such advice. But if an army of ants invaded my house, I'll kill those critters too. Humans, even - I don't discriminate.

Slugs are nice.

Cayenne pepper is nice.

Slugs don't like Cayenne pepper, about the most non-toxic bug repellent available. You can even shake up the pepper in a jar with water and slather it on.

That way you don't have to kill the slug. 'Cuz we all wish we could be Jainists, right?

Jainists are nice.

Wooden "slugs" are good too, way back when poor kids carved them to fool gumball machines.

Shotgun slugs are bad. They hurt. They are not nice.

(A ring of cedar or eucalyptus mulch around the perimeter of your house may keep them out and does not need to be reapplied like Cayenne. Cedar and eucalyptus are also nice, but bugs hate them.)

This does NOT mean on the slug!

LOL, yeah, Speck. Don't even think of salt either...

No,I don't want to be a Jainist. It's not even appealing.

What's the opposite of eponysterical? (Besides a great name for a sockpuppet.)

It's not the opposite of eponysterical, just a humour subset called eponirony.

thanks chaps - they seem to prefer the basement to the garden, as the salad leaves are doing just fine. So I'll leave them be and we can coexist peacefully.

Didn't feel a thing, stilicho.
