It was an odd little story arc for the xkcd comic, and that was the only part with a "joke" attached... a good message, but kind of preachy for Mr. XK to do. I prefer his more recent Trans-Reality Trolling which I can relate to, having attempted to consciously manage my more vivid dreaming and gotten similar results.
