The Random Occurrences of the Day Thread This morning when I came to work I discovered that the building was full of beauty queens. [More:]They're all wearing sashes that say Mrs. Somewhere (I haven't gotten close enough to actually read the sashes but I think they're NC cities) and black pantsuits and heels and they are very, very polished with big hair and lots of makeup. This is so random; it's kind of enchanting. I don't know why they're here or who they are. The building I work in is kind of an arts mall - there are 3 museums and a theatre that share the space along with offices for a couple of dance & opera companies so there are often weird events going on but this has to be one of the strangest yet.
omg that's awesome! are they men or women?

Beauty queens are all around me. They're at my kids' school. They must wake up at dawn to do their hair and makeup. I quickly run in and out in a ponytail and sunglasses, with a hoodie zipped to my neck to hide my pajamas.

Why do beauty queens always have such large hair?

Cuz they seldom wash their hair just to get that look.

Because the bigger the hair, the closer to God, according to ... Steel Magnolias? (I forget.)

Beauty queens are an exotic, alien race in Berkeley. Or in Northern California in general, maybe- the biologically female ones anyway. We just read about them in the papers.

Well, I can't imagine how many washings it would take to remove such a quantity of hairspray.

I just wonder, why is the big hair aesthetic so popular among beauty queens, when you rarely see it elsewhere these days?

I have a beauty queen who shops in my store. She is tall, elegantly dressed (although her clothes occasionally remind me strongly of the 80s). But she's got the big, teased, curly, small-of-her-back length blonde hair. She's now of a "certain age", and the hair dates her more than some of the styles of clothes. She is married to a "Ken", who smiles broadly at nothing all the time.
