Serendipitalicious Ok guys, I know it's been forever since I've posted and half of you probably don't know me but this was too good not to share. Just over two years ago I posted this AskMe question about bluegrass...[More:]What initially prompted the question were lovely memories of my dad who adores bluegrass. We used to listen to it in his workshop and in his old, beat-up, Ford pick-up. Whenever I hear it I am reminded of him - his laugh and his voice and his smile and his smell.

One of the clearest memories of my childhood, though, was his nickname for me - Ethel. When I was very young I would come out of the bathroom after my nightly bath wrapped in a towel in my mother's arms and my father would always yell, "Get some clothes on, Ethel!" I loved it. Thought it was so funny. To this day, I can remember my mother carrying me into my bedroom to get me into my nightgown while my father bellowed about "Ethel."

Anyway, this afternoon I returned to the thread because I was considering making a few Amazon purchases and I wanted to see what bluegrass artists I may have missed the first time around and I noticed that one Metafilter user had favorited my thread. That user?

Ethel. I can't tell you how tickled that makes me even though I know it's only a coincidence. And I had to tell someone and I knew that Metachat was the place. And now I'm filled with warm fuzzies and have to go call my Dad.
Hee hee hee! That's awesome, LeeJay!

I've been good! Moved to Miami (hate it), got a new job (like it), have been incredibly busy (sort of like it), wish I'd spent more time on Mecha.

Can I assume that the endearing nickname "Ethel" came from the Ray Stevens' song "The Streak"? Specifically near the end of the song when the chorus is going on and the "witness" says "Ethel? Is that you, Ethel? What do you think you're doin'? You git your clothes on!"

In context it seems like your dad was referencing the song. And I loved that song as a kid.

terrapin, although I never heard my father specifically mention Stevens, that is surely a possiblility...and warrants another phone call.

Welcome back LeeJay!

God, I remember that song - it was playing all over the place when I was a teenager. I'm sure it was released way before the 1993 in that link - more like 1973, I would have thought.
