30 March 2007

I knew it. The pet food recall is being extended to dry foods... our Kayla used to eat the dry version of one of the brands in this recall, and started vomiting daily about a week before this story broke.[More:] She's fine, has been to the vet, and has been eating different food since I thought that might have been a "spoiled" bag or something (I changed brands to one sold at the vet)... now I think maybe we're lucky that she was so quick to toss her kibble, as that might have kept her from being actually poisoned.
"The recall expanded Friday to include the first dry pet food." Um, I'd like a little clarification on that. I can't find anything on the menu foods site about it either.

"Meanwhile, Hill's Pet Nutrition recalled its Prescription Diet m/d Feline dry cat food. The food included wheat gluten from the same supplier that Menu Foods used. The recall didn't involve any other Prescription Diet or Science Diet products, said the company, a division of Colgate-Palmolive Co."

Is that it? Just the Hill's Pet Nutrition is recalled?

I am so angry about how this is being handled I can hardly see straight.

Vet appointment is coincidentally on Tuesday, which is good.

Yay tosser/yet poor Kayla. Yes, I agree, the info doesn't seem to be clear and readily available.

Indeed... so far, the recall hasn't been extended to the brand Kayla was eating (Nutro, dry) but it's all around it, and it makes me glad we threw out her food on instinct. Luckily, she had just been to the vet for a checkup literally a week before, with blood work and everything, so we KNEW whatever was making her sick was something new in her environment.

Here's the list, TPS: http://menufoods.com/recall/index.html

They seem to be updating it, which is good.

These guys have been actively researching everything, and some of their information has come out before Menu Food's press releases.
They are local for me though so there may be a better source too:
Mad Cat (includes links to the dog brands too)

I feed my 3 cats Nutro Natural Choice dry food and I haven't seen any change in their behavior, which I watch very closely. I don't really trust that brand anymore though. This whole thing has made me come to the sad realization that any processed pet feed could contain something that could kill my pets. Frankly, I'm about a half a step away from being one of those cat freaks that makes their own cat food.

What a pain in the ass.

The Nutro website states that their dry cat food contains no wheat gluten and that none of their dry products are produced by Menu Foods.

Looking through the Hill's Pet Nutrition info. - they purchased the wheat gluten from the same Chinese manufacturer that Menu Foods used. Menu Foods didn't supply it to them, so they don't have to list the recall on their site. They should, but don't have to.

Saw a lucid news report at 11. The addition is ONLY the Hills food. Hills is not linked to Menu foods but used the same gluten supplier.

What is most odd is that no one has been able to verify the rat poison story and new reports have found trace amounts of melamine in the gluten but nothing that should be dangerous.

The stuff we use is great with no wheat gluten but available in a very limited area.

Thanks for that nutro link, blackkar. That's reassuring.

Thanks for the update, and I'm so glad Kayla's OK. She actually briefly tolerated me when I was visiting, so we have a bond.

Nutro dry food is in the clear. . .that is what our dog and cats get.

I feel for anyone who has to worry about this . . .

Great. Now I STILL have to wonder what caused it... but I'm glad for the others who were using Nutro food.

Even though our food has been "cleared" this shit is still frustrating.

One of my parents' dogs just died a few weeks ago but we thought there was no connection because the food in question was Alpo...well, they put Alpo (the wet kind) on the list just now.

Interestingly enough the other dog never got sick. They didn't eat this food regularly-mom got it for a "treat" for them since they usually ate the dry stuff.

I'm making a plug for Solid Gold Pet Food, mainly because I love asking the cat every morning if she wants her katzen flocken. And hunden flocken is even more fun to say, and almost makes me wish we had a dog.

I just switched the cat over to this a few weeks ago, due partly to the food scare and partly because we were wondering if a more natural/expensive diet would help with the allergens. She's totally picky, but loves this stuff, and she seems to make ikkyu sneeze less now.

It does seem rather atrocious how they're handling this whole poisoned food thing. I actually would not have heard anything about it had I not seen it here.

Thanks for the update, bunnies. Our beasties eat Nutro Natural as well.
