30 March 2007

Baby shower n00b Going to my first tomorrow. [More:]I don't know how dress or act/what to expect/etc, but I do know it has a lot to do with gifts. Problem is, I bought a gift where the couple had registered, but it's not going to arrive on time for the shower. For anyone more experienced in these hermetic rituals -- any advice on what I should say? Should I tell them my gift is on its way? Or would that make me look doubly dorky and/or, worse, self-aggrandizing?
Oh, dear, looks like I've still not gotten the hang of that "More:" thing.

I'd print out a picture of it and put it in the card you give them, with a note that it's on the way. Not self-aggrandizing at all - they'll be happy and excited to know they're getting it!

As for how to dress, baby showers are pretty casual, a lot more casual than they used to be. You could wear slacks and a blouse, nice jeans and a cute jacket, a skirt...many casual options. Women used to get really decked out for these things but nowdays not so much. The last shower I went to, the dress code seemed to be really nice jeans with jackets or cute tops for the younger crowd, and nice slacks with a blouse or sweater for the older women. No skirts or dresses in sight. It might be more formal where you are though, so maybe you should call and ask if it really concerns you.

I fixed your post.

Thanks, iconomy! Good suggestion on the photo/card -- I'll do that. Lol -- I kept wondering why you'd assumed I'm female (not that I mind), then it dawned on me that I must be going to an atypically mixed-gender baby shower. Goes to show how out of the loop I am. :)

It's for a couple of artists who aren't married, so I guess the atypicality of it makes sense.

Thanks again.

btw, how did you fix my post? What should I have done? Thanks!

Yep, I did assume you were female ;) So what are you going to wear? Do you look good in a skirt?

(I can fix your post because I'm a mod)

Ahh, baby shower virgin! Don't get too freaked by the ritual penis amputation; the "victim" is a highly-trained professional. Just don't try it at home.

I look fab in a skirt! (At least according to me, myself, the mirror, and a couple of glasses of wine).

On the more thing, is there anything I should do to make the "read more" appear? Or is that just something that the mods do on the majority of posts?

treepour, just use the MI (more inside) button.

Thanks, arse_hat. I clearly overlooked it. My bad.

Have fun, ooh and ahh over insanely cute little clothes, and enjoy the cake.

That said, my favorite baby shower gift is one that takes about 10 minutes on a sewing machine. You will need 1 bath towel and 1 hand towel. Lay both towels out with the hand towel on top, long edge to long edge, aligned in the middle. Sew them together. Fold the whole thing in half on the aligned centers so that the two unsewn corners of the hand towel touch. Sew from the corners of the hand towel parallel to the other sewn edge.

It's easy, economical and if the parents are like me, will be using it with their child for years.

I've done the picture in a card thing, too, for showers. I prefer it, actually, since I tend to buy from online registries when I can, and have it sent right to their house. Easier for me, using public transit, and I've been told by more than one couple that it's easier for them, having one less item to lug home and inside after the shower.

Whatever you do, don't get in the shower with the baby.
