If there was a landmark guide to the internet would goatse be Mount Rushmore? Trying to come up with internet "landmarks" and their real world parallels.[More:] If there are enough to make a little humorous illustrated guide, i may be inclined to make it.
Help?
Myspace would be New Jersey.

Tubgirl would be Old Faithful, drezdn.

Adds jonmc to "the list"

Sublime Directory would be Vegas: Sin City. Fark would be Sturgis during Bike Week. Flickr would be the Metropolitan Museum Of Art. The wayback Machine would be the Museum Of Natural History.

Goatse can't really be the Grand Canyon because it's definitely man made and not so much the handicap accessible tourist attraction people want to return to over and over.
It does have the souvenirs, though.

Postsecret would be the bathroom wall of a hipster coffee shop.

Cuteoverload would be a humane society.

Various personal ad sites would be various kinds of bars (except for eHarmony, which would be a very frightening kind of storefront church).

You Americans. All of your real world landmarks are American. What's the internet version of the Great Pyramids? The Eiffel Tower? Big Ben? Hmm?

I'm really just bugging ya.

i wish people could think of a list of internet landmarks for a start.
Oh well. Que sera.
This all started because i made some joke last night about an internet travel book with goatse as a landmark like Mount Rushmore. Then someone used the word goatse and i was surprised what they knew about goatse. It turned out they didn't and just thought it was a funny word. Then i had the perennial task of explaining what goatse was.
That look on people's faces, they never get it back, that wide eyed confusion.
My goatse explanation is getting pared down nicely. i've gotten rid of almost all the "um well"s and "it's kinda"s.

The Met museum isn't really a good match for Flickr because Flickr is a lot more democratic. It would be like this really cool art gallery with lots of individual cafes where people intently discuss their work - something that doesn't exist in real life yet.

Soulseek would be the exclusive hipster record store where people laugh in your face if you ask where the Ted Nugent is.
posted by matildaben 29 March | 15:19
That's what Soulseek was a few years ago, but now it's more like a record swap meet or something. Now Pitchfork, on the other hand...

Nah, Soulseek's relatively attitude free. It's more like one of those decades-old institution type places where vinyl's arranged all helter-skelter waiting to be mined and plundered. (and I've found some great rare Nuge on there-Ted live with Molly Hatchet covering Mississippi Queen)

IMDB would be some OCD old-guys attic full of TV Guides and Photplays. Archie McPhee would be a tag sale on the Moon.

Pitchfork would be the innermost ring of hell.

Foreigners DO bug the hell out of us, richat.

What country are you in, again? (Starts dialing the Pentagon.)

Yikes! I'm in, um, New Zealand. Yeah, that's it.
posted by richat 29 March | 18:05
This should be goatse.

Metafilter would be New Zealand - it's full of a sample of all the wonders of the world, green (countryside), blue (lakes) and grey (sky) dominate, the people are either friendly as hell or hate you with a passion and it feels like home to everyone who hangs out there for any time.
