MEFI DOWN FER A BIT YET - street riots "worrying but contained" reports Chief of Police.
Ha, that URL makes it look like mathowie's got something against the small. THE TINY, IT AGGRAVATES!

Oh, my. I've been trying to raise the metafilter for the last six hours.

More or less. Probably more.

I should have learned by now,

yes. yes you should. but you haven't.

but for some odd reason

odd, and inexplicable.

I still let my windows servers auto-update every night, and in the past this bit me in the ass.

and in the future, it will bite you in the ass.

*yawn*

I've been realy busy (and distracted) the past few weeks and was looking forward to splitting up some quality free time between MeFi and MeCha catching up. But now I guess more love goes here, which isn't actually a bad thing.

The new setup is untested and using some new software so it'll probably hit a few snags and when the site comes back we may still have some bugs about,

ahahahahaha

At least mathowie takes full responsibility for the new software in the Week 4 MeFi podcast, so we know who to hang in effigy when problems occur.

In effigy? It's weak-kneed liberalism like that that keeps our country website from TOTAL GLOBAL DOMINATION!

Surely this will be the thing that brings the mathowie administration down!

Remember when he reinstalled the OS, but not the updates, and the server was broken into?

Good times, good times.

To be sure, delfuego took half responsibility and he definitely knew better, too!

Is there any particular reason Metafilter is run on Windows? It seems to cause problems.

Can you even run ColdFusion on Linux? The obvious next question is why the hell did Matt choose CF, but that's water under the bridge.

Yes, but you really shouldn't.
posted by cmonkey 25 March | 14:23
Yeah, ColdFusion on linux is a terrible idea... if you must run it on a unix-like OS, run it on AIX.

Which is really stretching the phrase "unix like."

I'll bet it wouldn't take more than a couple days to wholly reimplement all of MeFi's functionality using RoR or Django or suchlike.

Smack on some SpamBayes software, and one could start automagically identifying troublesome posts/posters, and more or less meta-moderate via the statistics. Really reduce the workload.

Iconomy, I can't believe you went there.

Meanwhile, Mefi being down? Is like a cilantro sandwich.

That, or he stepped barefooted onto some Micro Machines. Those sumbiches hurt.

Update via status blog:

Due to some foibles at my host, it seems like it'll be a couple more hours before we can get into the new servers and get them setup, but once we get the clear go ahead, it should be just another couple hours.

Facing a day without Mefi, I was forced go actually go outside in the direct sunlight and walk around the city all afternoon. I can only pray that this never happens again.

I think it goes like this: He's really a hardcore programmer, and they had this academic-license copy sitting around at UCLA when he worked there.

And yes, the functionality has been replicated many times over in LAMP. shrug

Later that day
... there will be a string of small bugs around (stuff that updated daily/hourly will need to be re-setup) ...

We have an alcoholic friend of the family who describes the phobic hallucinations of his addiction (and they are especially bad when he detoxes every now and then) as "squids."
The squids are out tonight, without my Metafilter.

www.metafilter.com actually resolves on 74.53.68.130 now, for those that are interested. Unfortunately, the TTL on the nameservers is still over 12 hours long, and the aliases for AskMe and other subdomains haven't been pointed at 74.53.68.130 on NS1.EOD.COM or his other authoritative name servers, so lotsa luck seeing the site as anything like normally functional, for awhile. Why in the world he's handling DNS like this, is something known only to the mathowie.

Type http://74.53.68.130 in your browser URL bar, if you need a comfort fix from the familiar Blue page...
