Because we're the richest, most beautiful bunnies around... What are your favourite inexpensive beauty/personal care products?
My favorite what?

(actually, I'm rather fond of this Biolage creme hair wax. It tames my locks nicely)

Smith's Rosebud Salve! Greatest combo lip balm/cuticle cream in the world, baby! (But it melts like a mofo in hot weather, so be forewarned.)

Dr. Bronner's soap.

I have become quite enamored of this Suave Body Wash for Men, either of the Active Sport or Refreshing scents; scents which do not linger after rinsing, I might add, a very important detail. My favorite cologne is Grey Flannel. Other than CloseUp toothpaste and Cherry Chapstick, everything else is the cheapest available.

Well, ok, I do admit to gravitating toward Charmin over the generic brand as I grow older.

Some kind of generic shampoo that the partner buys, and blue Colgate.

Any makeup from B Parfumerie in London. It's just amazing stuff.

Solid cake shampoos from Lush Cosmetics. I have long hair and one bar lasted me almost a year. It'll also give you the best lather ever!

I'm always curious about these questions--mostly because I don't really know what qualifies as "inexpensive" in cosmetics. I mean, what most people consider inexpensive.

The least expensive beauty product I use regularly is Rimmel volume boost liquid lipcolor ($6.99/tube) and Ivory soap (roughly $0.63/bar). I don't know that I consider my other products "expensive" but they might be.

Maybelline great lash mascara.

Cetaphil, for sure.
Or, more specifically, generic Cetaphil!

Also... is it odd that I won't buy Charmin because their commercials bug me?
I get what we refer to around here as "the puppy brand" because of the cute dog on the package.

on preview... GREAT LASH RULES MY WORLD.

In my TV days, I bought all my dresses at Woolworths and Sky City, mainly because the boonie cashiers were used to seeing five o'clock shadow on their women's clothes customers.

Neutrogena Sheer Highlighting Blush

Skin Effects by Dr. Jeffrey Dover Advanced Brightening Complex

Panoxyl bar 10% (I still battle the acne)

I know it's bad for the environment, but my little tub of Vaseline lasts forever and it's better than any sort of chapstick I've found.

I've used Dial soap all my life, and Crest because my cousin is the Crest brand manager. Represent! I use Tresemme shampoo (not tested on animals!), and Neutrogena skin stuff. I think all of my personal care products are reasonably priced.

I don't use mascara because it always ends up all over my face; instead, I use an eyelash curler (and I've only recently started doing that - I wish I had discovered eyelash curlers years ago, I love mine).

I buy my tissues based on whichever brand has the coolest pattern on the box that will match my decor. I will make a special trip to Target (even though there's a CVS 20 feet from my door) to purchase tissues, because they have the best selection.

Barbasol Shave Cream, Lemon Lime. I buy several cans, when I can find it.

Witch hazel instead of rubbing alcohol.

Neutrogena Foaming Face Wash.

Mark cosmetics (lip glosses, eye shadows, various glittery things)

And of course, Vaseline.
posted by ThePinkSuperhero 22 March | 21:46
I can't figure out how to use an eyelash curler. My eye sockets are too small for them to fit into or something.

Maybelline Great Lash (waterproof version - anything else ends up all over my face)
Suave shampoo (it's less than a dollar! And my hair is so short that I just don't need an expensive shampoo.)

Suave hairspray (the professionals line which is Suave's cheapie version of salon sprays)

Neutrogena, Almay or Sonia Kashuk tinted moisturizer

Avon, Lipsmackers and Burt's Bees for lip balm

Estee Lauder Youth Dew and Cinnabar fragrances (I wear one of these almost every day)- the sprays are $25-$33 which is pretty effing cheap for perfume these days. (I also love Coco Chanel which is not so cheap. haha. Actually, I love Coco Chanel, and most of the numbers versions as well. hahaha.)

Revlon nail polish (I'll buy almost any drugstore nail polish brand if I like the color. Except Cover Girl - I just really dislike cover girl products.)

Phisoderm face wash (or cream) depends on the weather

Aveeno face moisturizer but not the brightening stuff because it makes my skin freak OUT.

Aveeno body wash (the gentle version) - I have to be careful about the soaps I use. For some reason I can use Aveeno OR Youth Dew bar soap - which seems weird since the Youth Dew is heavily scented and I'd think it would make my skin annoyed but it does not. (Unfortunately Estee Lauder does not sell the bar soap - you have to get it as part of a set normally at xmas time. I usually end up buying it on ebay.)

Neutrogena Rainbath body wash, purchased in a large (32-oz?) bottle from Costco.

Everything else I use is probably considered moderately not-inexpensive.

Me too. I rarely buy expensive cosmetics. I do like Lorac lipsticks, but the price tag is insane. I used to buy Chanel, Bobbi Brown, etc. I find that discount store brands are just as good in most cases.

Witch hazel instead of rubbing alcohol.

agreed. It has a better flavor and aftertaste.

I much prefer the 2 blade Gillete Sensor Excel shaving cartridges over any of the 3, 4 and 5 blade wonder systems out there, not the least because I can sometimes buy a 5 pack of Sensor Excel for under $4. At less than a buck a cartridge, I can use a sharp blade all the time. And I have a beard that it is both incredibly heavy under the chin, but also wavy/curly, so a close shave is tough to do 1 month out of 3, as the hair follicles flip directions. Worse, a bad shave is all kinds of under chin irritation in cold and hot weather.

And I've been using plain old unscented Mitchum Gel anti-perspirant for 25 years. That stuff is always on sale, somewhere, and it's the most effective anti-perspirant on the planet. Stuff that's cheap, readily available, and works as advertised, rules.

Burt's Bees Lifeguard Lip Balm. . that is about all I use. . .honest. . .I look this good naturally.

I hate the smell of regular witch hazel. Naomi Wolf recommends lanolin--and I use vinegar for bra itch.

Bra itch? To be explaining, please?

I find the best deals ever by simply reading what "products" are made out of. For example, scody's rosebud salve is in fact awesome, but that tiny $5 tin is really just two ingredients: petroleum jelly with a rose scent added to it.

Bio oil.

BTW, I've tried Great Lash several times after hearing/reading people rave about it but it just doesn't do it for me. I always think, well, this time it'll be different, but it never is. I like Max Factor mascara, the new one in the gold case with the funny rubbery brush. I can't remember the name of it.

Another vote for Burt's Bees lip balm. Also: Neutrogena body wash and shampoo. I'm using Garnier Nutritionist face moisturizer at the moment and it's okay. Makeup varies, but like EJ, I don't like Great Lash.

Sesame seed oil and brown sugar. Mix half and half and bring into the shower, shower hot until you are all wet & clean, then turn off shower and scrub everywhere with the mix. Rinse the mix off, and maybe finish up with some baby oil if you still feel dry. Your skin will be like silk for at least two days. Works all over, from face to toes.

And it's cheap.

Last night I got a library book that does like a Myers-Briggs for your skin and makes recommendations. I have Dry, Sensitive, Non-Pigmented, Wrinkled skin. (Husband "I could have told you that.") Celebrity example - Clint Eastwood. Nice. Main problem is adverse reactions to moisturizers and sunscreens. She makes specific product recommendations and some other good points. Example: don't use powder. She's right. I look better today without it, it was just a habit of years and years. Anyone ever use a mask with sulfer as an ingredient? It's supposed to calm the skin. Anyway, I'm making copies of my chapter to take to my dermatologist appointment next month. (Leslie Baumann The Skin Type Solution.)

dabitch, that sounds awesome.

Sadly, we spend TOO much on most personal care products. Mrs. tr33 is getting into Arbonne, and I am also in love with their incredibly expensive products. But man are they awesome, and a little goes a LONG way.

But other than that, which for me is mostly face care, and Aveda and Davines for hair, I couldn't live without my Dr. Bronner's. Oh, and also have been getting into Method products, which are quite affordable.

FWIW, eyelash curlers scare the hell out of me. Not that I have ever used one, but when my better half does I need to leave the area. I'm terrified that she'll sneeze while holding her lashes in that demonic vise and rip her eyelid right off. *shudders*

Oh, that's good to hear LoriFLA. It seems quite sound advice.

I love personal care products. I always have. Ever since I was little, I always wanted new soap, new shampoo. When I was a teen and got my first "teen" face care products, I was over the moon. A walk down the drugstore aisle is like a walk down memory lane for me- "OMG, Seabreeze, I remember when my Mom bought me my first bottle of Seabreeze. OMG Clean & Clear- I used that for years. OMG...."
