I am doing the tourist thing in NYC right now. If I drop eighty bucks to go see Avenue Q, am I going to walk out thinking it was totally worth it, or am I going to wish I spent that 80 bucks doing something else? Thank you for your advice, sophisticated urbanites. Additional detail: I am flying solo (attending a conference)
I had gifted tickets to Avenue Q, so I don't know if I would have paid 80 bucks for them. It was an entertaining show, but as someone who's been exposed to more shocking stuff on TV, I thought it was sometimes a little watered down. However, the songs are catchy, and it's a funny sendup of Broadway shows, if you're into that sort of thing.
Avenue Q is probably on the TKTS board; so you don't necessarily have to pay full price. I wouldn't, but then again, I never do. It is really fun, though, and you should definitely see a Broadway show while you're in the big city!
If it is still playing at the Golden, you might be able to get cheaper tix at that booth that sells tickets to undersold shows.
I would say, go. We went last year, having bought tickets in advance online, and it was great, even from the cheap seats.
One thing I did last year was take the subway (b train?) to Green-Wood cemetery in Brooklyn and just stroll around. Between the classic glacial moraine hills and the old old graves, it was really really pleasant, and easy to get to from Manhattan.
This is one of the things that's on my list of things to see. Quite a few friends have said it's good. And it's on mid-week in London for under £35, yay.
