I saw it last night. It was gorgeous, and laden with testosterone (both in the graceful, perfect violence and in the fact it made me feel like an out-of-shape leper). It's not getting the greatest reviews, the main complaint that it is pandering to the teen boy video gaming set, but, as a 25-year-old boy gamer, I liked it.
My wife liked it as well. It was a good movie for what it was, and I liked how it showed the a real story of glory with a storyteller's eye (carefully exaggerated details, like a rhino the size of a locomotive--exotic beasts shown the way they would have appeared to those unfamiliar with them).
Side note: Not appropriate for kids. There were at least 3 babies and 5+ 4-10 year olds in the audience and I wanted to slap their parents. Is it really that hard to get a babysitter?
Sciurus and I saw it on Saturday. I thought it was glorious! A feast of man-flesh, beautifully done and the story was a great story. It reminded me of The Cell in that the scenes were quite visually stunning. And it was gory but I think it was all apt gore. It fit with the story so it didn't seem excessive or offensive to me.
I saw it Saturday afternoon. I think it's flawed in parts (the narrator, especially: "Only the hard. Only the strong.... Only the hard.... Only the strong.") And the bits with Leonidas's wife dragged a bit. But it's still a hell of a lot of fun.
Is it as cram-packed with CGI as the previews would have me believe?
I would describe it as CGI cram-packed with Live Action. I thought it was a lot of fun. The first thing to remember is that this is based on a graphic novel, so if you go expecting an accurate depiction of the battle of Thermopylae you will be disappointed. If you go expecting an action packed blood fest with history filtered through a fantasy movie then you will get what you are looking for. I think they overdid the "monsters" a bit, and the story is, well... pretty spartan, but overall it was fun.
Oh, and for those not interested in oiled up six-packs and man-ass, there is the gorgeous Lena Headey, and that is a very very fine thing.
