07 March 2007

I've had it with winter.... Here's why. [More:]My skin is as dry as a brown paper bag. Everything I touch delivers a static electricity shock. I have perma-hat head. I walk like a 90-year-old lady so as not to slip on the ice. My car is filthy inside and out. The heating oil is almost gone. Wool is scratchy. I'm ten pounds heavier. I've been wearing the same five sweaters for four months (I mean, I wash them, I'm just bored of them). I miss strolling around the streets in the evening in a relaxed way, rather than rushing, head-down, to the nearest warm vestibule. I'm tired of hearty soups and stews and casseroles.

Basta!

Anyone else?
I am SO WITH you!

Ha! I was thinking of posting a "Spring is Here" thread. It is absolutely lovely here. We didn't have much of a winter, we hardly ever do. The windows are open, the sun is shining in, it's glorious. I feel like planting more flowers, washing the windows, and flipping the mattress.

Spring is not here yet.

Today, the temperature is 3.

Spring got here about a week ago when we started hitting the 70s during the daytime, and the trees are all starting to bloom. I was sick of winter before that, though... I get the dry winter skin thing, too. Ouch.

Testify! I miss grilling out. I miss sitting out on the porch with a beer. I miss short-sleeved shirts. I miss taking walks on Sunday nights. I miss driving with my windows down. I miss going to the park on lunch breaks.

It's snowing here today and it feels like there is no end in sight.

OMG Miko, 3 degrees? You have my sympathies. I realize Spring isn't here for everyone, but after a dreary few weeks, you can smell Spring in my neck of the woods. Even though we don't have much seasonal change, I am always more blah in the winter months. I too have gained ten pounds.

Last week we had snow. Then the cherry trees started to blossom. Yesterday it was in the high 60's and the indoor temperature at work shot up to 75. Last night, a front rolled in and it's raining and back in the 40's. I so want to lie in the sun, get rid of this lingering flu and not have my joints ache. Ugh.

It is snowing like crazy here. It looks very beautiful... from inside my warm house. I'm glad I decided to work from home today.

You need some retail therapy, Miko. I went out and bought some really nice sweaters and scarves yesterday and everything was marked way way down, so I saved a ton and now have new things to wear. I also treated myself to moisturizer, aloe face scrub (it smells soooooo good), some new hairbands (yay they're actually in style now, although I wear them all the time), some tortoiseshell hair clips, leather wedge shoes, new mascara, a candle that smells great, Prada perfume, scrubby glove things, and lavender bath salts. Today I feel soft, look pretty, and smell good. Which totally elevates my mood!

It's snowing here too. To me the worst thing about winter is how pissy and morose and irritable my husband becomes - he's an avid fisherman and he can't go to the beach every weekend like he does the rest of the year. So, he's miserable and restless and lost all winter and I can't stand to be around him until the end of March/beginning of April, when he becomes nice again. Right now I hate him and wish he would go hibernate somewhere.

Yeah, I feel you on that skin shit. My skin is super itchy. I've been getting hives. The heat just cranks in my apartment, so I sometimes have to open a window to attenuate it. I thought I was getting heat rashes. Then I tried different soap, moisturizers. Maybe I have a dust allergy?

If I have a new allergy, maybe that's why I can suddenly eat dairy products again. Maybe I had an allergy and it was replaced by a different allergy. Gotta get a vacuum cleaner. And a humidifier (the pans of water on my radiator are for the birds).

Now it's fucking snowing. Crom!

I need some retail therapy. I want to buy a cute spring dress to wear to all the spring/summer events I'm going to (weddings and other such things). I was thinking of going today, but that was the plan when I went to the office. Ho hum.

Everything I touch delivers a static electricity shock.

Make a dress out of Bounce dryer sheets. It'll take care of the static and you'll smell Mountain Breeze fresh as a bonus.

I was thinking about the retail therapy last night, but trying on clothes is rather depressing because of the aforementioned 10 pounds. You know?

What might work is kind of a 'detox' day featuring spicy vegetable broth, good-smelling moisturizer, a long swim in the heated pool at the gym, and some quiet time.

I have the exact same symptoms you describe, only replace "-old lady" with "-old man", and "car" with "butt".

IAWTC - completely.

Heehee jon. Not a bad idea. I freaking LOVE the smell of dryer sheets.

Miko, buy something loose-ish that you can wear now but will still fit when you lose the winter weight, like yoga pants or a wrap top or something. I got something like the tranquiliT wrap top pictured there, in black, and it's SO cute and comfortable.
posted by iconomy 07 March | 10:53
oooh, wrap top.

Sorry, Miko, I had difficulty reading this on my monitor due to the sun streaming in through the window ...

For once, my classroom's not too hot. The arctic blast has to have some advantage. But I seem to have developed arthritic knees.

As for static, last week a teacher at my school went to put her key in the elevator and, according to witnesses, a bolt of blue lightening shot out from the slot, knocked her back, and blackened her fingers. I get a little nervous now using my elevator key. Five minutes later and it could've been me.

I need some soup.

Do continue to be careful on the ice, Miko, even if it means doing the 90-year-old-lady creep. I fell on a patch of ice last night and broke my damn wrist. (*snarl*) Spring, come on DOWN!

Miko, even with the ten pounds, you are still adorable. You are also slightly more cuddly than ever. And you look kinda HOT in that one sweater....

The dry air is making has given me some bloody sinus episodes in addition to skin so dry it's irritated. Sweating while working out 3x/wk makes the skin problems even worse.

I was in SC this weekend and got to do my workout in shorts instead of long nylon pants over fleece ones, a nylon top, fleece overshirt, nylon anorak, gaiter from under collar to over nose/ears/mouth, woolly hat, mittens....

interrobang's butt is filthy? TMI, man.

And hey, I complained about winter two months ago. I win! Not sure what I win, but I win!

Wow. That feels like such freedom after the layers and layers, doesn't it?

How cold is it? It was so cold walking to work this morning, my nose hairs hurt. The good news is that there's no humidity at all, so my hair is not frizzy. The vernal equinox is on March 20 at 20:07. The days will be longer than the nights, and it will be mud season before you know it.

I can't wait for the nights that I can walk to and from the gym in shorts and a hoodie. And the time I can spend on the deck - reading, playing on teh internets, smoking.

YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH, um, what-the-fuck? I am ENTIRELY OVER SNOW AND ICE. Man, any time anyone ever whines again about Seattle rain, they will have their ears soundly rounded by yours truly.

The temperatures outside? The wind alone will scar your face! It's like something out there hates you and wants your skin as it's pelt or prized wall hanging.

Thankfully, there are warmer places that serve thick brown ale.

Spring? Yeah, whatever. Call me when the ground doesn't shatter under your feet.

It was in the sixties today. It is going to be for at least a week with two chances of severe storms. Around 1/2 of my crocus varieties are up and blooming, another 1/4 are starting to pop out of the ground or at least show some leaves (some bloom before leaves, some put up leaves first). Daffodils started opening up today. Tulip leaves are showing up above the surface.

This weekend just gone, I spent two days working my arse off 12 hours on each day with a chainsaw and (huge, angry, nasty, dangerous) woodchipper clearing trees that have been felled. It was so fucking hot (~35c+) that I drank eight litres of water on each day and still couldn't quench my thirst for more than five minutes. I couldn't work for more than 30 minutes at a time without sitting in the shade to rest for ten minutes and recover.

I can't wait for the weather to cool down, because the work has just begun and I am sick of the constant heat already. Thank Christ it is now autumn and the weather should start to cool down a bit any day. Of course, it never snows here and temperatures rarely get into single digits celcius (and then only at night), so I may have a different perspective.

However, I do want it to stop fucking raining so the fucking concrete truck can get in to pour the fucking slab for the shed. I just had $180 worth of recycled concrete delivered which I have to go out and rake around after work tonight so they can get in tommorrow as long as it doesn't rain too much tonight. Then I can work for 12 hours a day this weekend in the searing heat to build the shed. Such is life.
