Ask mecha (a 2-fer): Does anyone know who the photographer of this great Ida Lupino promo shot (inside) was, or what it was for? Also, she is apparently considered the first woman to ever direct a noir film; who are some other female directors in this genre? I can't think of any. [More:]

More info about her film "The Hitchhiker", based on the true story of a serial killer, here and here. She also wrote and directed the 1950 B film "Outrage" (scroll to the middle of the page), a film "remarkable in being one of the first Hollywood movies to cover the then taboo subject of rape" (wikipedia).

She also directed for TV, and was nicknamed "the female Hitch" (as in Hitchcock)" according to this article.

WOW, I really want to see this movie now.

That promo shot is amazing- I hope somebody here knows what it was for.

I think she was about it...the noir series I've been to in NY and LA always try to dig up obscure gems and I haven't seen any other female directors. It was her line from They Drive by Night I quoted in the post about Bezzerides which was removed from mefi.

Of course out of print (screen)writers don't matter.

I did a paper in Women's Studies 101 (a really, really long time ago) about women directors pre-1940. There were only three or four to speak of, Ida Lupino being the most successful. The other one I remember is Dorothy Arzner. There was also one named Rose (I think), but Googling "women directors Rose" doesn't help a whole lot.

Man, remember writing papers before Google? How the hell did we do it?

Dorothy Arzner directed one of the recent additions to my favorite movie list, Craig's Wife (1936).

There were dozens of female directors working in Hollywood before the sound era. The opportunities dried up as the studios got larger and streamlined production. If you look at this list of female directors, there are quite a few from the US, but most of them didn't direct after around 1920.
