I was a myspace hater I hated on myspace for years, but no longer.[More:]I recently succumbed, found an old friend from high school, and he sent me this photo, which makes it all worthwhile. Are you a myspace hater like I was? Guess what-- it's not all semi-literate 18 year-olds. Who knew? Not me!
it's not all semi-literate 18 year-olds.

So, based on that picture, it's also former semi-literate 18 year-olds? :)

Am I the only person whose eyes were drawing to the awesome Rickenbacker bass?

Wow... if I didn't know better I'd think the guy in the middle was someone I dated when I was about 20.

Wow, you dated Robert Smith?

How do you know it isn't
posted by dersins 05 March | 13:17
Well, could be. Was that picture taken in 1999 or so, in the Buffalo area?
posted by kellydamnit 05 March | 13:36
Ah. Uh, no. I'm old.

1987. Connecticut.

Were people still dressing like that in 1999?!?
posted by Specklet 05 March | 14:09
Hell, people are still dressing like that now. The main difference is that they can buy everything they need in the mall at Hot Topic.

Oh, and they don't get beat up and called "faggot" as much.

Not that there's anything wrong with the mainstreaming of once-alternative culture. I'm just saying....

Kids these days. Pff.

I see little skater punks wearing The Cure t-shirts and think they don't know anything. *am possibly cranky about being in my mid-thirties*

We didn't actually have Hot Topic in this area when I was in college. But then, I live in the backwater of NY. Thrift stores and occasional trips to Siren and House of Ill Repute in Toronto.
Well, my friends did that. Me, being the fat girl, I made my own clothes and cultivated a look based on wearing layers of slips at once in varying states of tatter and staining.
Then I got a decent job and dressed like this.
posted by kellydamnit 05 March | 14:45
yep, dersins. i could have been the identical twin of the girl in that photo. same haircut, i just bleached it more and added blue streaks. ahh, the days of black liquid eyeliner.

i graduated high school in '86 but i was a young graduate.

i had that same cure tshirt too. stole it from a guy i dated. he had john taylor hair, too.
posted by lonefrontranger 05 March | 14:54
I don't think there is a girl in that pic.
posted by Specklet 05 March | 15:08
yeah, I was just about to say the same thing as Specklet.

well ok, i'm assuming the one on the far left is the 'token' girl in the band. circa mid-80's this was a typical highschool band theme. 'token girl' usually played a keyboard based instrument and/or sang. i sang, for the record.

and yea we were pretty much indistinguisable from the guys.

i guess i should simply say that i looked just like that *person*. honestly, we were all rather (ahem) androgynous back in tha day.

not like emo kids now. oh no.
posted by lonefrontranger 05 March | 15:30
The one on the left is George. Not a girl. But we were all pretty damn girly.

Obviously.
