Will you continue your blog after you've posted all 300 songs?
posted by ThePinkSuperhero 02 March | 11:40
Probably, but i'm not sure what'll be next.

(also, I goofed on #143. The song title is "She's Fucked Again" and the group is called the Gear Daddies. sorry for any confusion)

Santana stands out like a turd in the punchbowl in that list man. Which I'm happy about, I like a little grit in my Foie Gras. I got an ipod again, even though I swore I wouldn't, I'll have to figure a time to come out and gank the whole list from you, it's fairly cannonical.
posted by Divine_Wino 02 March | 11:46
Really, wino? I figured as a salsa fan, you'd appreciate "Soul Sacrifice," for the great percussion. It's one of the few 10 minute plus jamouts I can not only stand, but totally groove on. (and I'm available anytime, just call, only you cannot reveal the top 100 under penalty of death, or at least an atomic wedgie)
posted by jonmc 02 March | 11:49
I hate Santana like there was cash money involved.
posted by Divine_Wino 02 March | 11:51
I dislike Santana more than anyone Bill Laswell has ever worked with who isn't Matisyahu.

'Rock Box' is rock-solid (though I might go for 'King of Rock,' and I'm a little surprised you didn't pick 'Walk this Way'), but 'The Blueprint'? How about '9mm Goes Bang,' or 'My Philosophy,' or 'You Must Learn'?
posted by box 02 March | 11:56
box: I heard "Rock Box" before I ever heard the Aerosmith collaboration (and I'm a mid-level 'smith fan at best) so "Walk this Way" while gratifying when it hit, struck me as kind of obvious. And that keyboard sample and KRS's delivery get me every time on "The Blueprint." As for Santana, that selection is much more rockin' and energetic than his later stuff, but this, like all favorites lists, is highly idiosyncratic.
posted by jonmc 02 March | 12:01
I think we could counter Jonmc's top 300 with a hiphop list Box... Actually I'd just put a copy of Paid in Full down on the table and go get a hoagie.
posted by Divine_Wino 02 March | 12:01
hey, I realize there's not a ton of hip-hop on the list, but what rap I did pick is solid. (and FWIW 'Don't Sweat The Technique' narrowly missed and wino, I found a hoagie shop on Astoria Boulevard that'll warm your cockles or at least your colon).
posted by jonmc 02 March | 12:05
(also, one promise I made when I out this together was to be rigorously honest about what my favorites were-no substituting to make myself look cooler.)
posted by jonmc 02 March | 12:06
OMG I love the Gear Daddies! I wonder if they are still around. I had "Let's Go Scare Al" on cassette. I like "Statue of Jesus" particulary.
posted by rainbaby 02 March | 12:08
I think we should work on a top-300 hoagie list. Man, I'm hungry.
posted by box 02 March | 12:13
Some top hoagies in no particular order:

Italian Combo- Lots of oil and vinegar, don't be afraid to really shake on the oregano.

Broccoli Rabe, grilled chicken and mozzerel (as the italian americans say!), YES!

Cheese Steak, WIT!

Meatball Sub.

Rare roast beef, lots of pepper, a little mayo, horseradish, swiss cheese and tomato.

Turkey, Provelone, hot peppers, crumbled bacon, shredded lettuce.

Ham, American Cheese, yellow mustard, tomato.

Bhan Mi, extra pickled whatever the fuck they are.

A new one I just discovered: Chinese braised beef short ribs and kimchi.
posted by Divine_Wino 02 March | 12:27
I wish I worked next to a store called Top Hoagies that played Jonmc's list while I ate hoagies.
posted by Divine_Wino 02 March | 12:32
Night before last I had the 'Rock Bottom' hoagie from John's on Astoria Boulevard. Chicken cutlet, bacon, american cheese and brown gravy on garlic bread. It was delicious. The rest are in a similar vein, or more likely, artery.
posted by jonmc 02 March | 12:37
Also, they'd have Belgian fries, and some kind of mind-boggling beer.

A few more top hoagies:

Monte Cristo (admittedly, I've never had one in hoagie form, but why the hell not?)

oyster po'boy (hey, are we going to argue semantics, or are we going to eat sandwiches?)
posted by box 02 March | 12:37
Holy Fuck, I was in New Orleans last weekend and I had the best hoagie ever, I forgot to add it.

Barbequed Shrimp Po Boy (not really barbequed, more like sauteed in this crazy pepper and butter sauce and then placed in a hollowed out Po Boy roll with pickles. Jesus Christ I want one so bad right now!)
posted by Divine_Wino 02 March | 12:41
I am so behind with listening to everything you keep posting. I think I've got about 20 posts still to get through. Still, as long as the tracks stay online, I'll be okay.
posted by TheDonF 02 March | 12:43
I would go to that hoagie shop to listen to jon's music, eat hoagies and drink Belgian beer.

Right now I'm about to eat one with chicken cutlet, muenster, coleslaw, pickle and russian dressing. Maybe not artery-clogging enough for mr. mc, but it's delish!
posted by gaspode 02 March | 12:44
This sandwich that I ate yesterday, a three meat (ham, bacon, & sausage with american cheese on a buttered roll, I threw on some hot banana peppers. sometime today I shall pass a whole suckling pig) is the last hoagie I ate (box saw it yesterday):

YOU HAVE NO IDEA HOW MUCH I WANT TO EAT THE FUCK OUT OF SOME HOAGIES AND BEER! I AM SIMPLY NOT MYSELF WITHOUT SUCH THINGS!

That said, I recommended your blog to the mister, jon. He's really digging it, but is brokenhearted that none of the tunes are yoinkable.
posted by jrossi4r 02 March | 12:54
I wish I worked in a hoagie store called Top Hoagies that played my least favorite music on the street, but jonmc's favorite music in the store, so people would have something to look forward to beyond just the killer hoagies I dish out, with a smile or a leer or maybe a cutting remark about the size of their hat or the fit of their shirt, because I roll that way sometimes. And then I'd say, "You like it, come back tomorrow, I'll have another top hoagie for your delectation," or maybe, "There's one size fits all, and then there's your hat! It's a keeper."

I'd just keep 'em coming like that 'til they moved me to the slicer for being outta line.

For lunch, I just decided on the local sandwich shop's 'Club Mex': smoked turkey, bacon, & hot pepper
cheese on pumpernickel with lettuce, tomato & house spread. Hold the tomato, add peppers. I'm a sucker for a club sandwich.

jrossi: there's a way, apaprently it involves the RSS feed
posted by jonmc 02 March | 13:03
Jesus Wept jon, that picture is like the display window at a healthfood store. Live a little buddy.

Hugh, don't for get the Saint Rodney Dangerfield classic: "That's a nice hat, did you get a free bowl of soup with that hat?"
posted by Divine_Wino 02 March | 13:03
Then on Wednesdays there'd be an old guy who'd come in and say, "You again? I thought the shhit factory closed down in 1937." And I'd sing "Yackety yack, don't come back," while I put together a giant monstrosity of a hoagie stacked with brisket, smoked turkey, nine kinds of tomatoes, hard-boiled eggs, hot pastrami, and a copy of the Daily News on whole wheat toast with mayo, mustard, and spicy Egyptian ketchup, just how the old guy likes it, the same sandwich I've been making him every day since 1763, when he was just a boy and I was just the time-travelling hoagie chef you see before you now.

No discussion of sandwiches is complete without a link to the Roy's Place menu, for your perusal and edification. Welcome to Gaithersburg, may I take your order?

"Looks good on you, though."

Hm. I'll let him know to tinker with that. Thanks, jon.
posted by jrossi4r 02 March | 13:06
(is he just digging the tunes, or the essays, too? Cause I'm busting my hump on those, really.)
posted by jonmc 02 March | 13:10
Both! He's hugely into music, but not a big reader. So short essays on songs he loves suit him just fine. He's learned some stuff he didn't know before, too. (He would have to side with the Wino on the Santana business, though.)

Hugh, you have been awful busy with the timetravel lately.
posted by jrossi4r 02 March | 13:26
Time-travel is like potato chips: once you start, you just can't stop.

He's a real cool head
He's making (I wish this for him) real good bread. . .

Keep 'em comin' jon. And by the way, seven people have saved your blog to del.icio.us, including someone called "Windfucker," who refers to you as a "hardened trench warrior for rock and roll."
posted by Otis 02 March | 13:42
He's really digging it, but is brokenhearted that none of the tunes are yoinkable.

Try this:

Open a tab and put this url in the address line:

http://a4.vox.com/

Now open whatever specific audio page you like from jon, and you'll see a long number/letter sequence in the url. For example, on this page, the number is 6a00cd970622754cd500d4141e10e2685e. Copy and paste that number in the above url, like this:

http://a4.vox.com/6a00cd970622754cd500d4141e10e2685e

Now, add "-mp3" on the end, like this:

http://a4.vox.com/6a00cd970622754cd500d4141e10e2685e-mp3

Meatball is always good.

Ah, but I may as well, try and fuck the wind.

Yes, Hugh. 'Tis a thing of beauty.

fuck the wind if you mus, but try to avoid breaking it.
posted by jonmc 02 March | 14:02
Mine was already broken when I inherited it.
posted by Hugh Janus 02 March | 14:06
taz. . .I get some kind of 404 screen when I type in that a4.vox.com url. . .am I doing something wrong?
posted by danf 02 March | 14:11
I'm against it, personally.
posted by gaspode 02 March | 14:12
danf, a4.vox.com/ url is useless alone, you won't actually get anything until you append that with the number/letter sequence and the -mp3 at the end to get a whole url.
posted by taz 02 March | 14:17
taz-

Yeah I got it. . .took awhile to get it through my luddite head. .thanks.

Just caught up on the last two days, with my ever-lovin' on the sofa readin' over my shoulder naturally, and am quite in a state of delight. (Two white russians help.) Rather loved the "Little Willy" essay; makes me miss Joe.

And I'm about to break out the hoagie menu, so it's just about a perfect evening.
