Trailer for the "This American Life" television show. [More:]Crap. I think I'm going to have to sign up for Showtime now.
Seeing Ira Glass talking on that really took me aback when I watched this the other day. It looks awesome, though.

My first thought was that Scott Simon tried his hand at TV and it did not really *take* and I am glad that he's back where he belongs on Saturday Morning.

Also, don't have cable, not getting it so if this is a hit, I spose I'll rent the dvd's or depend on *ahem* the kindness of strangers.

My complaint about them doing a tv show, is that I like people to master and extend the range of their medium (as they've done in radio), to move on to another medium with a similar format always depresses me.

(For example, great comic book writers who are doing it just to try to break into tv or movies).

This has ruined the visual representation I had created in my mind of Ira Glass. That's probably a good thing. Do you think iTunes will pick it up?

I have a DVD of the pilot. Neener neener neener.

I haven't seen the show yet, but if the trailer is any guide, the radio show pace and edit philosophy is gonna cost 'em viewers. Tuning in halfway through a radio TAL story is often an exercise in futility, as they favor stories with a 15 or 20 minute development span, and even if they do an interest bridge, or foretell, they tend to be pretty coy about it. That's just not gonna play for big numbers in cable TV.

The show may find it's audience, but it won't get much of a new audience from channel surfers. Hence, as a former broadcaster, I predict a short and fondly remembered life for the TV show. I hope I'm wrong. I do like to see new TV work.

Ira Glass has now joined my pantheon* of hot, geeky, articulate guys.

*Other members of this group include Alton Brown, David Sedaris, my friend Chris, and Ted Allan.

That looks great! Can't wait to see it! Too bad I don't have cable...

I agree. I first "saw" Ira Glass in the They Might Be Giants movie "Tale of Two Johns" and decided then and there I wanted to marry him. We unplugged our TV January 1 and it's been "TAL" podcasts that keep me sane during the day.
