I've never made sushi before, but I love eating it. So, I thought I'd try making my own. It's pretty ugly, but it was tasty. (And yes, lfr, that's wasabi tobiko)
Heh, rainbaby, I think I'm going to make it more. I've made miso soup lots, and I make it "American Style" with lots of stuff in it. Now I just need practice making it pretty...
I think your sushi is pretty. I'd be nervous about making it at home because I don't know where to get good fish. Eel is my favorite, and I think the BF would leave if I brought eel into our house. He tried sushi for a friend's birthday a month or so ago. I'm surprised he didn't throw up. We went to Wendy's after dinner.
I had massive potato skins from Hecky's for dinner. They're the best potato skins ever! BBQ sauce, chicken, green onions and cheddar cheese. Each one is half a baked potato-sized. I *heart* Hecky's.
You know Hecky's is within walking distance of where i work and i've never had their potato skins, but let me tell you that is about to change!
And I've made sushi at home a couple of times. If you're squeamish about raw fish, make vegetable rolls. But since youngergirl44 is in Chicagoish, I'd suggest trying Whole Foods (ask for sashimi quality fish and if you're still nervous throw it in the freezer for 25 minutes and then let it sit on the counter for 10 minutes to warm before slicing.
I'd also suggest Dirk's Fish on Clybourn near North and The Fish Guy on Elston near Irving, I think. Or you can hit Mitsuwa in Arlington Heights, where they have very small packages of very high quality fish, including prepared barbecued eel, so you could get a serving of eel for yourself and your hubby would never know.
Cinnamon, if you go to Hecky's you have to let me know how you like it. Their BBQ beef ribs are kinda Flintstones-opening-credits-ish, and very good. You get three big potato skins in the appetizer - I can usually only eat two.
North and Clybourn is within walking distance from my house (Whole Foods would be on the way) and the BF works in Arlington Heights, so I'm out there every so often. Thanks for the heads up! :)
Eek please tell me about your sushi! I see California rolls... what do you have inside the other ones? I'm going to post a homemade-sushi advice thread at AskMe some time in the future, because one of the absolute worst things about living here is that ethnic foods are exotic, and exotic foods are expensive... So for example, the Chinese take out that you guys can get will cost, like, five times the amount here, and from what I've had so far, is not nearly as good.
I had sushi for the first time in 10 years while I was in Athens, and it cost us 66 Euros for three people (in an ordinary small cafe - nothing special). That's nearly $30 per person, for a pretty small amount, with no extra side stuff. So, so, so depressing. It was fantastic, but gaddam. I used to eat sushi two or three times a week when I was in the U.S., and the situation here is very depressing.
So, I'll be rolling my own - but don't have the first idea what to do about the sashimi. I think yours look great, eek.
oooh... pretty sushi! Not ugly at all.
I made tacos for dinner. Far less impressive. (although I am proud of myself for breaking free from the tyranny of the seasoning packet).
