My google groups mefi universe search engine Searches metafilter, metachat, other related sites, and any other sites in the metafilter universe submitted by users. With tabs for refined filtering, and a firefox search extension.

Not too popular on projects, but maybe some people here will care.

The whole concept of custom google search engines fascinates me in general. Just think of all the custom searches that will soon exist.

It looks very interesting.

And I wouldn't take the popularity business too hard.

Projects doesn't attract a whole lot of traffic anyway. I know that I never read that section of the Metas and would probably not have known about this if you hadn't posted this here.

Yea, I rarely visit Projects. I should do so more often.

Hey, I already voted for it (but I'm probably the only living MeFite who checks out Projects as frequently as AskMe).

Projects is perfect for RSS. I hardly ever visit the site but I like to check out the feed a couple times a month.

Good idea, bingo. I voted for it.

So...I was going to wait for specific suggestions, but I wonder if I should expand it to user blogs on my own. For example, I was thinking I would just find the blogs of mefi users with high contribution indexes, and start attaching those.

So, a search for "cats" could theoretically take you to hits on places as diverse as askme, mecha, languagehat's blog, jonmc's blog, etc. But I guess the question is, would anyone actually want to make such searches? Maybe for tracking memes, or something.

How would you determine which mefites' blogs to add, bingo?

sveskemus: Well, that's the hard part. The three ideas I've had are

a) I could add blogs of users who ask me to add them, or that are suggested by other users (i.e. you could suggest the addition of someone else's blog). This search engine is open to submissions directly from anyone who has a google co-op account (using "google marker" is a good way), but I can also take suggestions directly via email.

b) I could look at the mefi contribution index (e.g. here, although that one may be out of date, seeing that MiguelCardoso is listed so high), and add blogs of those users who are obviously high-visibility.

c) I could arbitrarily add the blogs of users who I think have interesting blogs, plus those of anyone who asks. The least scientific but perhaps the easiest way.

Yeah. My vote is for option c.

I don't think I got it, when I first saw the Projects post, but I do now. (I'd been in hardcore google research mode for the 88 Lines thing at the time.) Seems like a neat idea.

Dear God, I love local news sites. || I usually have a strong aversion
