The passive writing was among the worst that has been read by me.

I can't stand my local news station. It's so heinously and predictably cliched and bad. If there's bad weather, they always send out one or more schmucks to give the report live, like that adds any credence. They lead with trumped-up scare tactic headlines that don't wash and then the actual report is vapid.

Omitted from it? Like someone forgot to put their return address?

"People all over the area are not following postal regulations, and may be putting your children at risk. And what does this mean for your property taxes? This story coming up after StormTracker 3000 Weather."

The text of the article states:

The call came in around 11:49 a.m. after some employees opened the package in the mailroom and something was emitted from it.

Thus, the joke is "lol, copy editing!"

However, the same article inexplicably goes on to state:

Emergency personnel have taken the other employees to a Krispy Kreme office across the street for possible treatment.

If I have to endure triage, then Krispy Kreme is the place for me. Then I can die with a glazed expression. Pun intended.
