14 February 2007

I just wanted to share some pics of the recovering sugar glider, Scout. Be warned, one pic contains a owie-looking abrasion.

[More:]

He's feeling better, but still a little low energy.

Tonight he very much wanted to be near me; he wouldn't get off my hand when I was trying to put him back in his cage. So I held him close and he dozed off in my cupped palms. So very sweet! He's never done that before, and my heart was overwhelmed with his trust and vulnerablilty.

Plus, look how frickin' cute he is! *squeeeee!*
Ohhhh! Look at his little hands!

That is one hell of a nasty abrasion. I currently have one of my girls clambering all over me - I shielded her eyes so she couldn't see that. Scout is one very cute glider boy

Hm, that's quick the freaky looking rodent.

Oh. I thought the abrasion was going to be on your boobs ur b00bz. Since, that is, you told me yesterday that the gliders were "in ur shirt"

On Preview: CS, they're marsupials!

occhi, he does this just heart-wrenching thing where he grabs my fingertip with his little hands and chews on my fingertip.

Don, sorry about the owie pic. It actually looks not half bad in that one. Be glad I don't have any pics of Dill's abrasions... Motherfucking cocksucking fuckadoodle collars.

Yep, not rodents! Marsupials. Like kangaroos and possums! And they glide! Like flying squirrels!

Also, I forgot to mention: when Scout wouldn't get off my hand, he was sitting there grooming himself, and every once in a while, he'd give my hand a few good licks too. So adorable.

Oh, and sorry about the lack of a boobie abrasion shot, pie. But if you look at the whole set, you can at least see a glider on my (sweatered) boobie...

That's so cute. Such sweet eyes and pink little noses. Good they have their collars off and hope the wound heals. Poor babies./

My Mom's out of town for a week, so I'm feeding her 18 year old Abyssinian, Misia. It's so used to having her company, when I come to feed it, it's not too interested in food, but rather likes the scritching under the neck and petting and cuddles and whuffles. I leave the radio on for her.

I love glider licks! I love the finger grabbing thing! I'm working on getting some delicate chewing from Ginger and not full-on gnawing (ow!). That's a reasonable pic of the abrasion? OMG :(

awwwwww. The 'what's that clicky noise?' ending was delightful! My god, but they're adorable.

No wonder the poor little guy was depressed, that sore on his neck is horrible.

We had a couple flying squirrels that used to hang out by our house (in the trees in back) in Atlanta. Scout is cuter, but it's nice to be reminded of them, too. SO CUTE!

Other than that looks like they almost got their heads gouged off ['orrifyin'], they look like the goth glam leaders of the marsupial world. The tail is too too much.

so not gonna mention what woke me up.

I'm not clear on why your gliders' neutering recovery is so traumatic, and lengthly. My current dog had monorquidia necessitating an exploratory abdominal operation, including a 7 inch incision closed by about 20 stitches, to find and remove the retained testicle in his abdomen. Yet, he had only 4 days of pain meds, was mostly recovered in 6 days, and was his rampaging, woods running self in 10.

What is keeping your gliders down for a whole month?

elizard, when Scout investigated the camera, he was very thorough. They're incredibly smart and inquisitive as hell! He was so puzzled by the little silver thing that whirred... it was utterly charming.

The sores from those damn collars are utterly horrifying. They both had them on both sides of their necks. You're seeing Scout with something that's healing well. God. I'd rather loose a finger that watch these animals go through that.

Paul, the tough thing about being a glider owner is dealing with the fact that they are wild animals, and are prone to self-mutilation. Any incision site, no matter how well it's healing, is a potential risk for over-grooming/chewing the mother fucking daylights out of it. So they have to wear a collar for an ungodly amount of time. In fact, right before Scout fell ill, we'd gone to the vet who told me the collars had to stay on for at least another week. It was just him being overly cautious, but I snipped those fucker off (when I realized that they were causing an unwieldy amount of stress) and the boys were fine. You just can't monitor them like you can a dog, plus I've heard enough stories about them chewing out their intestines to make me risk having the collars on for as long as it took to clear the danger zone.

Yeah, I know that there's a reason why people should stick to domesticated pets, but for whatever reason, I ended up with these little guys. And part of my care for them involves making their lives the best that they can be, and that included neutering them. Sigh.

They're doing well, are happy, and I'm am determined as hell to give them the best quality of life I can possibly deliver.

Oh god, and Paul, I'm so sorry about your dog! Glad he made it okay, tearing about the woods and all!

Not much to say that hasn't been said, but just wanted to pop in to say "hi" to the gliders. Get well soon, little ones!
