Betty Bowers, America's Best Christian, on The Astronaut & The Beauty Queen [More:] Ms. Bowers, so saintly she instructs the First Lady in matters of spiritual import, has her say on les scandales de la semaine:

This hasn't been a particularly good week for crazy people and their malodorous fluids, has it? First, Astronaut Lisa Nowak is found diapered in her own filth trying to end a life. Next, Space Cadet Anna Nicole Smith is found covered in her own vomit after ending her own....

Between a baby-talking Anna in Hollywood and a diaper-wearing astronaut in Orlando, Florida has, once again, shown its knack for taking an unfair share of the available crazy.

I know the collective weight of MeFi has decreed that dancing on Anna Nicole's grave and making sport of Lisa Nowak's abortive Pamper-clad rubout are beneath us, but we MetaChatters are made of nastier stuff, n'est-ce pas?
I'll leave Anna Nicole alone since I believe you deserve a break when you die. As for Ms. Nowak's antics, well...I'm not sursprised we have crazy people in the space program. I mean, come on, how else are they supposed to get in touch with the aliens who control their thoughts?

I didn't get the whole "How could NASA let this happen?!" angle with the Nowak story. Are employers suddenly responsible for everything their employees do? Or is it just certain fields, like the military? I work in the private sector, and if I went crazy and tried to kill someone, I doubt people would be holding my boss responsible. Very odd.

I have not followed closely the stories, but I think Nowak was training to fly(?) If she had exhibited irrational behavior before (and I have hard time believing she just snapped) and the Agency didn't notice/didn't do anything about it, I would be concerned. She wasn't just an employee, TPS like you and me.

As per Anna Nicole, I fucking liked her. I always thought she was good looking, in an old fashioned way maybe, a bit loud for my taste, sure, but so what? I feel *terribly* sorry for her. I do not get why people call her opportunist. She married a old guy for his money and fought to keep it. So what? If he were younger would you care? Wasn't his son an opportunist too for fighting for his dad's money? C'mon now. Poor girl, that is all.

I really have hard time straining my intestines to produce vile for people dead or in dementia. Sorry, I am boring like that.

I don't really get the gold digger references for ANS, either- ok, I get them, but they don't ring true. Someone once asked Melania Trump, would you have married Donald Trump if he didn't have money? And she replied, would he have married me if I wasn't beautiful? So on the ball. J. Howard Marshall worked his whole life; and if he wanted to use his money to have a young, beautiful, vibrant wife, why does that make HER a criminal? It's funny how nobody blames him.

Gee, you guyz really are nice! Now I can die in peace, knowing dirt won't be dished over my grave.

Mixed metaphor much?

Aww, thanks. If you insist though, we can crap in your grave. Hey, we can crap on you now. Whatever you are into. Anything to please you, really.

I agree with tps and carmina, except about liking Anna Nicole, because I knew very little of her, not being in the U.S. during her reality show/diet spokesperson period. I do remember her as the fabulous Guess! model, and of course I knew about the ongoing court battles regarding the inheritence, plus her son's death, and the question of her baby's paternity, from the regular internet news. Lisa Nowak had or is having some kind of psychotic episode... I don't know why.

I like to conserve and nurture the full force of all my hate and contempt for the people who are systematically disassembling the constitution, raping liberty, promoting ignorance, exploiting the poor, murdering thousands, and making life for everyone worse, every day, everywhere in the world. The fact that they usually hold themselves up as models of morality at the same time makes me wish that their hell exists, because I'd love to dance on their graves and know that that's where they are while I'm doing it.

There is a lot of glee over the Anna Nicole and Lisa Nowak cases, and I can't help believe that it is mostly purely jealousy or envy, despite the fact that their fame and/or achievements (in Nowak's case) or beauty (in Smith's case) certainly didn't bring them happiness or any kind of peace. Also, for reasons not quite clear, I do feel that women, having once crossed the line of what is considered generally acceptable in some way, are much more apt to be hated, hounded, and scapegoated, which makes me want to swim against that tide.
