MetaChat is an informal place for MeFites to touch base and post, discuss and
chatter about topics that may not belong on MetaFilter. Questions? Check the FAQ. Please note: This is important.
I know it's an honest question, gnfti, and I'm glad you asked it. You're not the first to ask -- just the first to do so publicly. I've held off on sending out another email, because I didn't want to sound like I was picking on anyone. I'll do it soon, though, just to clarify. (Because I know not all DJs will read this thread.)
Anyway.
Do we still have to call dibs when no dibs are called on the wiki for a particular timeslot and one just feels like spinning? Honest question.
The short answer to your question is Yes.
The longer explanation is:
1a. Some people are diligent about posting here when they're broadcasting.
1b. Some people aren't.
2a. Some people check the right sidebar to see if anyone else is broadcasting.
2b. Some people don't.
3a. Some people check the Wiki first, see that no one has signed up, assume no one is broadcasting, try to broadcast, and find that they can't, because someone else already is.
3b. We're back to where we were in the first place.
This is only going to work if we designate a single place for EVERYONE to claim dibs, always, even if it's a spur-of-the-moment thing.
And it's been pointed out to me that it seems silly to have to stake your claim on the Wiki if you're already broadcasting. My best response to that is, well, you should have done it before you started broadcasting. And, even if it seems silly, it at least will let the next person know when you plan to be done.
In the end, it's really not all that burdensome -- even if it does seem pointless. It's an easy thing to do, and if everyone gets into the habit, it'll make things a whole lot smoother.
Points 1 and 2 are dead easy, and I feel mandatory for any would-be DJ. Point 3 I'm not so sure about. The wiki is an extra step for a lot of people I feel, and it's kind of separate from the rest of MeCha.
I don't think this is the right place for a discussion about the mores of Radio MeCha. I will gladly do my best to announce my sets on the wiki beforehand, but I would really like to hear what other DJs (aspiring or veteran) think about it. Thanks again, pups.
To kick it off, the ubiqitous yet funny foulmouth rap track performed by that bird out of Veruca Salt. Nobody ever listens to the first track of Radio MeCha broadcasts, do they? ;)
02. Fresh Cherries From Yakima - Communist Daughter (Neutral Milk Hotel)
Awful. Just awful. That's why.
03. Editors - French Disko (Stereolab)
04. Get Up Kids - Close to Me (The Cure)
Surprisingly good.
05. Whiskeytown - A Song For You (Gram Parsons)
Ryan Adams's old band pays tribute to arguably his musical father.
06. Sun Kil Moon - Ocean Breathes Salty (Modest Mouse)
Red House Painters is not for everyone. Some find it cathartic, some find it somnolescent. Anyway, the band's understated singer, Mark Kozelek, released an entire album of Modest Mouse covers. This is the only one I find listenable, and if you like Red House Painters, it's great. I like Red House Painters.
07. Elliott Smith - Waterloo Sunset (The Kinks)
Breaks my heart.
08. Bettie Serveert - Lover I Don't Have to Love (Bright Eyes)
Dutch Pride!
09. Failure - Enjoy the Silence (Depeche Mode)
Actually rocks. Hard.
10. Tortoise and Bonnie "Prince" Billy - Thunder Road (Bruce Springsteen)
11. Matthew Pottymouth (as Frank Sinatra) - Monkey Gone to Heaven (Pixies)
The setlist history thing hasn't worked since (I think) dodgyboy handed over to seanygeezer. Didn't realize it was still linked on the Wiki. Can you post the page that contains the actual link, instead of the dead link? I'll get rid of it.
Sure. It was quite confusing when I first started DJing, as I thought there was some secret hidden enigmatic riddly place one could post one's playlists! :)
