Quilt, a pass it on art project. [More:]

Here's an idea for a game we could play. I'd be up for organizing this or another emcee.

This game is played for three or four rounds by three or four players each round. Players are given four elements to start a round and must use two or more of them in their square. The elements can be incorporated as is, or may be modified in any way (including being reproduced in new media) as long as they remain recognizable. The elements will be about 20-30 pixels across any given direction. (What size square?)

For the first round, I will pick four Flickr photos licensed under Creative Commons, two from one theme* and two from another. I will select an element from each photo and from these create two sets of four elements. One set will have the elements from the two photos for Theme A, and also the two elements for Theme B but those two will be modified to color match Theme A (via conversion to negative and playing around with hues). The second set will be the reverse: originals of Theme B; color negative versions of Theme A.

The Theme A set will be given to two players in the first round. If we have four players per round, Theme B will also been given to two players. If we have three players, Theme B will only be given to one. Each player will create a square, using two or more elements from their set, and then select a different element from their square to be passed on to the next round's set.

Round one will thus return three or four elements (and their accompanying square) to me. I will again make two four-element sets, and again Theme A elements will be color modified to fit Theme B and vice versa. If I only get three elements back from players, I will use a previous element from the flickr photos to make the fourth. The new sets will be given to the round two players, either 2 players for each theme or one from Theme A and two from Theme B. They will each make their square and element, pass them back to me to pass on to round three, and so on.

When we are finished we will have nine to sixteen squares split among the two themes, with repeating elements scattered throughout. We can put them together into a quilt showing the round-by-round progression. But I think it might also be fun to combine the squares in different ways. Like into X's and O's or faces, or randomly even. Could be a fun thread to let every body mash them together.

* Themes can be simple, such as light and dark or warm colors and cool colors, or more elaborate. For instance, it's Mardi Gras/Carnival season and I'm partial to purple and green ... we could select New Orleans inspired elements. Maybe simple to start, eh?

Bunnies play?
One problem is that the last round doesn't get to pass on an element. Maybe they could still make one though, for use in a border for the whole quilt or something.

Similarly, players in earlier rounds may submit an element which doesn't get picked up by any later players. Hopefully everybody would understand that is just a quirk of the game, not personal. We could possibly avoid it if every player is as inclusive as possible in using the elements they're given, especially the ones that are 'native' to their Theme, but I do want it to be as free-form as possible.

Actually, I guess any player who doesn't get their element repeated, whatever round they play, could be part of the border.

I don't really understand the explanation, but I'm game.

Likewise, I don't follow the exact plan (since I'm reading here with one half of my brain and still working with the other), but it sounds like fun and I trust your vision to pull it all together. :)

I'm confused, but I think I'll give it a try.

I'm confused, but I'm in, if I can do it before Friday, or Saturday or Sunday or whenever I'm going to Athens, which I'm not sure of. Make me an early-rounder!

Hmm, I'll try to make a mockup. but I'll be busy elsewhere for the next couple hours.

I'm receptive but I'm not in until I see the mockup (or read the first post enough times to understand what the heck you're proposing).

Mockup mockup mockup!

This thread is useless without diagrams and flowcharts.

Count me in. :)

Ok, I only got the first two rounds of a mockup (made of wingdings) done...which may mean it's too complicated.

I'll start by creating two sets of four small images, what I call 'elements' above.

Round 1, Theme A: ≡ Click to see image ≡

Player 1 gets Theme A and creates this from it:
≡ Click to see image ≡

Player 2 gets Theme B and creates:
≡ Click to see image ≡

Player 3 gets Theme A also and makes:
≡ Click to see image ≡

From the small pieces, I make the following sets for round two:
Round 2, Theme A: ≡ Click to see image ≡
Players 4 and 6 get Theme B and players 5 gets Theme B.

Player 4 makes:
≡ Click to see image ≡

Player 5 makes:
≡ Click to see image ≡

Player 6 makes:
≡ Click to see image ≡

Which seeds the sets for round 3:
Round 3, Theme A: ≡ Click to see image ≡

The first two rounds put together look like:
≡ Click to see image ≡≡ Click to see image ≡≡ Click to see image ≡

But could also make:
≡ Click to see image ≡≡ Click to see image ≡≡ Click to see image ≡

Well, not much to look at there...but clearer at least?

Wow.

That seems a wee bit complicated.

I was thinking of something similar to this: The Quilting Bee and this and this only, possibly, not so cutsie.

Someone would come up with a basic quilt block and the participants could fill the block with anything they wanted. Or a theme could be picked (real quilt blocks, bunnies or whatever).
