Update on the grandbun and my folks Well, we made the visit today...[More:]

It went very well. The first sign was when I called to say we were on our way-Mom asked if we had had lunch-we hadn't-and she said she had lunch meat and such for us. We got there and she had quite a spread and selection plus my favorite soda-Diet Pepsi with Lime. Which they do not drink. So, I knew she'd been shopping specifically for our meeting.

I have a cold so I couldn't hold the grandbun-but mom said she'd hold the baby while we ate. She did-and I could see her trying to be gruff and failing miserably. She held the baby most of the rest of the time.Meanwhile my father asked my daughter to go out to the shop with him to see how he'd fixed up its second floor (two story garage/shop with upper game and rec room-all of which he constructed himself from the ground up.)

He'd made a rocking horse with a shag carpet mane for the baby, which he gave my daughter. I'm sure he already had the horse around, as he does make them and sell them occasionally, but I've never seen one with a mane made specifically so "the baby wouldn't bump his head" and I quote.

It's a start.

What? What did your father take??

I too want to know!

Oh, and I'm glad it all went well too.

I am dying of curiosity too!

Meanwhile my father took the baby and said, he's so cute, I'm running away with him! They jumped on the horsey, which had been fitted with a special engine, and rode off into the sunset.

Meanwhile my father took pictures non-stop, saying "I just love this little baby and I want to be able to show everyone I know my beautiful grandbun!"

Actually that last phrase was meaningless. I had started a sentence, worded it differently and forgot to rid myself of the sentence fragment.

Sorry!

The baby was his cutiepie best, btw. Awake, alert, yawning, burping, "tooting" (if I did it it would have been a fart) and other such kinds of baby entertainment.

I'm very happy for you. Babies are usually really, really good at melting the hearts. It's so we don't eat them.

Then let us all continue to finish the sentence.

Meanwhile my father took one look at the baby, his heart melted and he said to your daughter "you have made me the happiest great-grandfather in the world."

Meanwhile my father took one whiff of the baby's "toot" and passed out on the floor.

Meanwhile my father took a good, hard look at himself in the mirror and realised that he felt really good about starting to bring his family back together, and that he would do everything he could for his new grandbun.

Meanwhile my father took one look at the baby and took off all his clothes, saying "if it's good enough for the baby to lay around on a blanket naked, it's good enough for me, too".

Meanwhile my father took back every bad thing he'd ever said about grandson-in-law, at least for the day.

either that or...

Meanwhile my father took his 19-inch tube TV set in one hand, lifted it over his head and said "now can ya do THAT" like Lloyd Bridges in that Seinfeld episode.

or...

Meanwhile my father took a box of the baby's diapers we had in the back of the car for himself.

What the hey.

Very good news, bunnyfire. Sounds like a nice visit all the way around. I hope they just keep going forward - looks like a strong possibility.

This is wonderful to hear, and I hope we'll soon be hearing the next chapter.

I'm so happy for you and yours, bunnyfire. A very encouraging start, indeed. Thanks so much for the update.

Pips, I was holding out for Oprah, actually ;-)

Don't worry, as events warrant, I will certainly update, folks. Thank you all for your support, truly.

One sad thing about all this, however, is my poor son-in-law. I know this might be a little hard to believe but apparently this is his first exposure to real honest to goodness racism. He's pretty hurt. But I am proud of him, he is keeping a good attitude through all of this, and there is no chip on his shoulder.

Grandbun is winning. I knew the little bugger could do it!

That's so wonderful, bunnyfire! It was a big step for your parents and I'm glad they took it. Now they just need to keep heading in the same direction.

Then if you had no doubts that you loved your son-in-law, this should really cement that your daughter is with someone who respects her and her family more than pettiness and ignorance and fear. And that is saying a whole lot.

I'm glad things went well.

This made me smile.

I hope things continue to improve, bunnyfire.
