30 January 2007

I'm addicted to this raw saw palmetto honey I bought the other day. It's so delicious! I put it in my tea and I eat it out the jar. (It's the only sugar I eat, back off). Anyone else have current food addictions? I'm looking to expand.
When I can find it, (which is rare, my local Key Food never stocks it, when I go to the Union Square Food Emporium I usually buy like 5 jars) Nance's Sharp & Creamy Mustard is a must. I put it on sandwiches, use it for dipping...I've never used it in a marinade but I bet it would work. It's not you're typical mustard, its texture isn't grainy or ketchupy, it's creamy and it tastses almost like really sharp cheddar cheese but still like mustard if that makes any sense. Worth seeking out.

ooh thanks, jonmc. mr. g's the mustard fan of the family - I will pass that along to him.

Double Stuffed Oreos. I could eat a whole package in one sitting. Which is why I don't buy them. :(

Something I do buy is Absolut Pear vodka. Not quite a 'food' but it'll do.

I've been on an avacado kick lately. I've always been fond of them, but these days I just can't get enough. They're ungodly expensive, but every time I go to the store I find myself buying two or three of them.

Also: garlic bagel chips. I haven't bought them in months, because one bag is all it takes for me to start on a weeks-long binge. Oh god, yes.

That's funny, I just bought some raw honey today, and have been drinking it in tea this evening!

Some of my food obssesions: almonds, avocados (*sidles up to specklet, steals her 'cados*), arugula (whoah - what's will all the "A" things? Hey, I also love asparagus and artichokes... this is getting freaky!), and, lately... coconut.

When I've had insomnia recently, waking up in the middle of the night, I've had hot cocoa with coconut cream and/or cinnammon. Sounds weird, but it feels very soothing to me. (yeah, I know chocolate has caffeine, but caffeine has never been my sleeping problem...)

Tazo Chai...the one made with black tea. Mmmmm.

Hey! Get away from my avacados!

Specklet's spelling of avocados reminds me of my preferred (and customized) pronunciation: uh-vawk-uh-dohs.

Lately it's been grapefruit.

Oh god, avocados. I love them. But I can never time them right. If I want one right now, I can't find a ripe one. If I buy a couple ahead of time, I don't get around to eating them before they get squishy. Now I really want an avocado.

My current favorite lunch is a real garlicky hummus, whole wheat pita and side of melon (cantelope and/or watermelon). There's something about the zestiness of the hummus tempered by the sweetness of the melon that's just perfect. God, I can't wait for melon season to come around again.

*feels spelling shame*

Mmmmm. There are two avocados upstairs, and I haven't had one in ages. I think I'm going to go eat one right now.

Joining in on the avocado love. It's about the perfect food.

Here is my favorite brunch of all time:

lightly toasted (proper) whole grain bread, spread with a leeetle bit of wholegrain mustard, then half an avocado mushed per slice of toast, and then slice some tomatoes on top. and grind some pepper on there. Delish!

I have avocado aftertaste in my mouth right now. Yum!
posted by agropyron 30 January | 13:40
It really is funny... I bought the honey today, I bought almonds and ate them for lunch - that's right, an all-almond lunch, and I meant to check my guy that often has inexpensive, good, ripe avocados, but I got sidetracked and forgot. Avocados tomorrow for me.

And now I want hummus. And melon.

I have an avocado waiting on my dresser, next to a lime, for lunch. Mmmmmcados.

Food addictions? Trader Joe's White Cheddar Popcorn is pretty vital. I eat it while watching Battlestar.

All this talk about avocados is making me want one too. And I have turkey at home - there's nothing better than a turkey and avo sandwich on toasty wheat bread!

crap, now i want avocados...but they're so pricey. i've been on a granola and yogurt kick, they have strange granola at the local polish grocery which is loaded with black currants...tasty!

oh and even tho it's not a snack i really love colcannon right now, i'd never had it before and now it's all i want to cook/eat. i want to make it with kale too....cabbage yum!

Dried apricots form Michigan. Not too dry, not too moist, just perfect. Boy, have I been scarfing a lot of those lately.

I love a good avacado too. I like mine with white vinegar, salt and pepper.

Currently my food addictions are Earl Grey tea, Smart Balance microwave popcorn, and raspberry preserves.

Lowensenf Extra Hot Mustard for me. In some Tostitos Scoops, with ground buffalo, Jwala peppers and rice.

It's not exactly an addiction, but I made about 8 or 9 pounds of neeps and tatties for Burns Night Supper and, well... it's going to be neep week at Wolfdog.

Hey gaspode--is the honey saw palmetto-y enough to be good for the prostate?
posted by jrossi4r 30 January | 14:43
Probably jrossi, but you'd have to apply it like three times a day...

I was wondering about that also. It's funny that neither of you have them (although I know that you live with people who have 'em).

I think... albeit temporarily, until her "tenant" moves out, jrossi actually qualifies as having one.
posted by taz 30 January | 15:00
I don't know that one could ingest enough to make a clinical difference, jrossi? Of course one could always go Specklet's route.

Nobody goes near mine, other than a medical practioner. . . .it's not pleasurable in the least to have it messed with, in any way.

Getting back to food cravings, for some reason I'll find myself adding capers to cottage cheese or soup quite a bit. Sliced banana peppers -- the ones pickled in vinegar and brine -- will do in a pinch also.

I had a serious jonsing for pickled herring in sour cream. mmmmm.....fishy

Actually (not to derail) ALL women have them.

Damn Specklet-

Next thing you'll want is for one of your kind to be President or something.

I'm not jonesing for anything in particular at the moment. BUT. Should any of you honey-lovers (heh) run across avocado honey, don't hesitate to try it. The one and only place I've found it was someone selling it on the side of the road outside of their avocado farm in SoCal. It's the most intense honey you'll ever have. I still remember the taste 14 years later. Yummy!

My addictions are all simple. My food addictions are no different - icecream and Hudsons coffee. I am very sad that, due to my increasingly-expanding waistline, icecream is no longer on my menu. Well, Hudsons coffee is supposed to be off-limits too, but I have to walk past there on my way to work and I'm just not that strong :-(. (I did try the "skinny" verson but, like almost any low-fat alternative, it tastes like dishwater compared the the real thing).

I might, taz! I might. Or I might have two vaginas. It's anybody's guess right now.

Probably jrossi, but you'd have to apply it like three times a day...
Oh lord. There's an image I don't need in my head. It'd be like a chapter from a Herriot novel.

Well it seems to be avo season here in the rabbit head.
I too have been on the green total food tip of late. I find goats' cheese is going well with the things. At the moment I have a very tasty onion and herb goats' cheese which is kicking ass. Alfalfa and red peppers or tomatoes are also working it.

Hot crossed buns are in season again, which is teh roxxors.
Dates are rocking a maxxed out iron content and damn tasty. Check this vegan sticky toffee pudding - toothbendingly tasty (if you add too much sauce), it has had a 100% approval rate so far. That is to say it has drawn marriage proposals and offers of employment as live in chef. Isn't it amazing what a date can lead to?!11? Geddit, it's a motherfucking pun.

As we are having another mild winter, there are plenty of Spanish peppers, tomatoes, aubergines and courgettes in the area, not that chemically induced dutch crap. Keeping it large with the med veg in the borough.
Not an addiction though.
