Ask MeCha I found a yoga instructor who will work around my wrist RSI, but she charges £9/class, or £7 if I buy 10 weeks worth of classes in advance. Does this seem like too much to you?[More:]I'm trying to resolve some cognitive dissonance here, because I know yoga would be good for me but this is also a lot of money. I've taken other yoga classes before in this town and they were more like £4/class. OTOH, I couldn't continue in those because there was too much wrist strain.
It doesn't sound like a lot to me. But then again, I've never paid for yoga. Or sex, for that matter. I might be reconsidering on both counts, though. Time to branch out, you know.

Yoga classes in Boston usually cost me about $12/class. Washington DC was $14, if I'm remembering correctly, and San Francisco's usually $12-16 (I'm currently paying $12, but it's a student rate).

So, no, that doesn't seem out of line to me... I think? I'm stuck at a 1.5->1 mental exchange rate, so if the dollar's much worse than I think it is, it may be high.

That seems average to me.

Also, I don't know what the yoga community / scene / whatever is like over there, but here, it seems like every class I'm in has someone with wrist problems, and the instructors have always been really active in suggesting modifications for people with wrist problems (well, the good teachers at least). If the price is higher than you want to pay, is this instructor really the only one around who can help you? (I realize I live in the midst of yoga-ville, so I may be overestimating the number of teachers in your area.)

The other thing to do might be take a couple classes with this instructor to get a feel for the modifications you need for the poses, then continue on with other (cheaper) instructors, using the modifications the first instructor taught you. Any yoga teacher who gets snitty about that should not be teaching yoga; it's all about doing what's right for your body, not just following the poses -- most of the better teachers I've had have been really happy when students can effectively modify poses to suit their own bodies or injuries.

It's about average for a fitness class such as Pilates or yoga in a yuppie town such as Cambridge.

Well, it's about $2/£ right now, and I get paid in dollars so this really hurts. :( But keep in mind everything is more expensive here.

There are a few instructors, but I have found most teach before I get back from work. I asked another instructor who specifically recommended the instructor in question.

Ha, thanks essexjan. OK, I guess the real question is whether it is worth it or not. Maybe I should go to one class and see whether I want to continue.

Definitely sounds like it's worth checking out the class, at least.

To me that seems like a bargain, but over here it would be at least 9-10 UKP a class. 49 for a monthly card where you can take eight classes (mondays and fridays only) and use the gym facilities for other stuff. That sort of deal. There's free classes of yoga wed mornings in the park but that is only summer months and frankly that's just a nice gathering to morning-meditate in a group for a halfhour rather than special-for-you yoga.

(but that 49 deal you only get if you buy 12 months. So yaknow, there's a big commitment there...)

The average class here in Chicago is $15-$18. The last time I was in London, in November, I paid £12 for a single class. £9 doesn't seem outrageous to me.
