21 January 2007

Today is the 70th anniversary of the first performance of Bartók's Music for Strings, Percussion, and Celeste (I, II, III, IV).
I love Bartok, but hadn't actually listened to this piece before. I'm through movement 1 and I love it!

MSPC is a wonderland: the "fearful symmetry" of the first movement; the infectious, propulsive theme of the second; the hair-raising atmospherics in the third; the unexpectedly joyous dancing in the fourth.

I know jack about classical music, but I respect Wolfdog's taste, so I'm glad when he shares stuff.

Allen Ginsberg claimed to have written a poem (don't know which one) about a guy he would see now and then on the subway, and was moved by his noble expression. Turned out later to be Bartok, presumably on his way to teach at Columbia.

I love that Ginsberg got those "random subway crushes," too...
