The Janesville murders [More:](now international news) have affected us a little. The teenaged girl victim was an acquaintance of my niece, and they lunched at the same table just last week. We had about five days of no real news in the case except three bloody bodies and no suspects, so having it resolved this quickly (apart from the trial, obviously) is good.

We certainly have gotten used to big-city crime, from gunshots right on my block to drug houses to a guy breaking into my dad's surgeon's house through the ceiling. And when I was a kid, there was a really weird murder up the street that they eventually convicted three people for. And then there's the guy we knew who chopped up his wife because he believed he was God.

But this was already being called the worst murder in our county's history.

Just felt I needed to share that.
They keep using "tentatively charged". What does that mean?

I think it means they've charged him so that they can imprison him, but they're not sure if they've got enough evidence to go to trial.

Actually, I think it means that those are the charges that they intend to bring against him at his court hearing Friday. They may alter the specific charges before that point.

He isn't formally "charged" until it's entered before a judge.

"complex homicidal violence" sounds so chilling and gruesome, but also very strange... is this a regular law enforcement/judicial term, or was it made up on the spot for this particular case?

Google News Archive shows it isn't the first usage of the term.

They are trying to keep details of the investigation out of the newspapers. I think they are also not entirely sure of the cause of death, which may mean that the bodies were mutilated.

More connections: my mother knows someone who knew all the teachers at the day care including the woman who died, and my brother apparently worked at the same pizza joint as the perp.
