European MetaChatters: Are you currently riding out the apocalypse?
Yes.

It's a tad blustery, it has to be said.

Rumour has it that the Netherlands is about to sink into the sea.

omg. Not at all here... in fact quite the opposite; we are currently experiencing the "Halcyon days" that always come around the middle of January with really mild, sunny, beautiful weather. It's like spring here. I've had my window by my desk open most of the day, and only turned the heat back on after dark today, when it started getting a little chillier.

I hear that bad weather's coming early next week, though... I hope it's not that bad weather!

cmonkey where'd you hear that about the Netherlands??

We've had some really bad weather here in Denmark but I wouldn't go as far as to calling it apocalyptic.

That was just hyperbole, chewatadistance. But they have a lot of flooded roads right now, and they are party below sea level...

I can't think of a more milquetoast name for a bad windstorm than "Cyril."

Sounds like something an old British woman would name her terrier.

Bloody hell, yes. The trains were buggered and it took me two hours - twice as long as normal - to get home today from central London. The bastard train driver also tried to shut the doors on the train before everybody could get on. So four of us held the doors open.

Our lights were flickering too all day.

A little bit of wind and the entire country goes to shit. It's like the bloody apocalypse here.

The Victorians really knew how to build houses - I can see that everything is horizontal outside, but I can barely hear it in here. Cosy!

Hope all you other bunnies are ok - stay in, stay warm, etc! The Dutch have the best water engineers in the world, don't forget...

Also, this kind of weather has me listening to the shipping forecast in the hope of hearing my favourite bit of the Beaufort Wind Scale - violent storm force 11. Does that make me a bad person?

God, how British...

On the subject of the shipping forecast, I heard it the other day and they mentioned "squally showers". Weird word, I thought - must be a maritime thing. And then I heard on the TV breakfast news the next day for weather in London. Who suddenly decided to dig out a really old word to describe rain?

"characterized by brief periods of violent wind"
/heh heh
posted by TheDonF 18 January | 17:28
Not sudden - they've been using 'squally' ever since I can remember. In fact, it seems like quite a normal word to me.
posted by altolinguistic 18 January | 17:44
Really? I'd never heard it before a couple of weeks ago, and I live in the UK, so it's not like I don't have a pre-occupation with the weather. Are you sure you're not a visitor from the 1700s?

Zounds.

We were alright, in the end, but it was quite scary/entertaining here in Holland. Things flew which shouldn't, and all that.
