18 January 2007

Because I am an idiot, I went for a walk this lunchtime. [More:]The wind blowing around Millwall Docks was probably in excess of 60mph. Nevertheless the fountain (geyser-style) at Pan Peninsula was operating, with the wind making the water jet whip round like a sprinkler. I got wet. At one point I had to hang onto a bench to avoid being blown into the water. ‘Waves’ were crashing over the dock.

At the traffic lights, I had to hang onto a lamppost so I wasn’t sucked into the path of oncoming vehicles. The only route along the far side of the dock was strewn with smashed masonry from the roofs of the blocks of flats.

But the pair of grebes that live by the Lotus Floating Chinese Restaurant have had new babies, two peepy little chicks, that were riding on their mother’s back as she bobbed around in the water surveying the ruins of her nest.

My tube line is suspended due to debris on the line, but someone in the office who lives near me drove in today and she said she’ll give me a lift home, otherwise I’d be stuck here because train lines are suspended too, and no doubt bus routes have been affected by falling trees and other debris.

When I get home, I’m going to shut the door, put my jammies on and not go out until I absolutely, positively have to.
Good grief! I just saw video of a street in London on CNN, and people were literally being blown down on the sidewalk. The weatherman said some of the gusts have been measured at 74 MPH (119 Km per hour).

Definitely be careful, jan!

Yikes. How long is it supposed to blow?

It has really eased off here on the South Coast now, I can hear myself think for the first time all day. Warnings not to go out unless strictly necessary no use to those of us with school going children, and the damage is obvious when I went out.
2 dead and 2 serious injuries so far.
I HATE windstorms with a vengence, give me good old thunder and Lightening anytime!
Glad to hear you're OK but while it's very exciting, it really is dangerous.

I wore a skirt today. Not a good plan, as I found out when I went outside on a fruitless mission to put my bay tree the right way up. Gave the neighbours a good view though :).

In my eyes, Jan Of Essex, this makes you a fukkin' trooper, my dear.
Says a lot about the inner you when even through the high winds and debri you were able to find beauty in the chicks.

Get home safe!

Jeez! Glad you're getting home alright, Jan!

Joe, the wildlife around my office is amazing, but too many people don't bother to look for it. Seeing those chicks made my day. I only hope they survive this weather.

I got home safe, traffic was bad but I was grateful for the ride home. There'd were a lot of trees blown down as we approached this part of Essex where the forest starts, with emergency repairs, just the limbs that jutted into the roads sawed off by the council or the fire service.

A tree in my front yard blew over, a little conifer about 4ft tall. But, my gardening skills being what they are, it was half dead anyway, so it's a blessed release for the poor thing. I was going to put lights on it next Christmas, so it probably committed suicide.

Sadly, despite my efforts to drag it into the close so it blocks the passage of vehicles, it is far too small to cause an obstruction sufficient for firefighters to attend my home this evening, dammit.

Home for the night now. Curry for dinner, new episode of ER on TV later and working at home tomorrow.

The weekend starts here!
