"That stupid game Minesweeper — that probably has cost billions of dollars..." [More:]

I've never played Minesweeper, but lordy I have been one hell of a procrastinator lately.

There's even two tests at the end of the article to determine how much of a procrastinator you really are. Goody. I am going to procrastinate further and take them now. ;-)

I'll take 'em later.

Not Minesweeper, but the Tower Defense game that was linked on Metafilter the other day. What a god damn time sink this little bastard is. I can't get past level 32.

The fact that I am posting this comment right now, during work hours, does say a lot.

I wonder, though, if productivity has really suffered at all. It seems like work hours have expanded, and the technology has made a great deal of work more efficient. With that combination, procrastination (or just plain goofing off) actually seems expected -- you have more hours to finish work that takes less time.

At one job I had in which I was managing people, we realized that the habit the employees had gotten into of spending all evening (and sometimes all night) at the office was making them less productive. The teams that kept a fairly strict eight-hour-day schedule stayed more focused during that time, and got the work done, while people who saw hours and hours stretching out in front of them were more likely to put off work or drag it out to fill the time.

Oh, I also meant to say that the article was cute, though! It's impressive when a journalist can throw in that much self-conscious cutesiness without sounding smarmy.

a Canadian industrial psychologist found in a giant study that not only is procrastination on the rise, it makes people poorer, fatter and unhappier.

Perhaps it's work that's actually doing it. Stuck in annoying jobs with very little personal time given to you (example: in Canada, if I start a new job, after one year of working, I'm entitled to two paid weeks off. After 5 years, I get three. And weekends, and the rare holiday). Contrast this with countries in Europe where you can get 6 weeks off, plus lots of holidays, is it any wonder people slack off at any given moment? I work 8-1/2 hours, plus travelling time, and there's not much time left over for me to do things for myself. Thus procrastination. Trust your desires.

I thought the same thing about the article occhiblu.

After I read the article I was guilted into motion and got a couple things done around the house.
