askmecha: Is Yahoo DSL ok? [More:]I'm moving in 2 weeks and I'm thinking of switching to Yahoo DSL at the same time, since it's only $20/month, and I'm currently paying $52. . Before I tell my current (expensive-but-has-awesome-local-customer-service) DSL provider to cancel my account, can someone tell me if Yahoo is DSL I should stay the hell away from?

this is for 1.5mbps(max) download & 384kbps(max) upload service, which has been enough for the websurfing and emailing and occassional file downloading I do.
It's the same as SBC DSL, right? Me thinks so.

If it is, I recommend it. I've had problems a few times (all had to do with the wiring in my house), and they were excellent about fixing them.

Word of warning, though. I signed up at $20/month too, but it went up after a while.

I believe Yahoo usually resells DSL through a partnership with SBC, but I'm not sure if SBC even exists anymore. Didn't they just merge with AT&T, and reform into like some kind of Mega Voltron Ma-Bell?

I've set it up myself at two locations and have lived with it at a third. Once the service was up it was mostly stable, but the bandwidth was never what the advertised rates were.

Customer service *sucked* a lot. It was absofuckinglutely terrible. Getting someone on the phone with a brain even at level 2 or 3 seemed impossible. For example on one call, I couldn't get it through their thick, bastardly skulls that A) the OS wasn't important, especially considering I was running three flavors of Windows, two of Mac OS (9 and X) and at least one flavor linux at the time - plus the embedded linux in the router, and none of them were running Yahoo's stupid spyware client. "OK, I want you to reboot your computer and..." "Uh, no, but I'll reboot my router! But, really, dude, it's you guys. Your DNS has been screwed up for days. I can connect directly in all protocols and ports by IP. NAMESPACE NO TRANSLATE! I HAVE IP. ALL SYSTEMS HERE ARE GO. I'M GOING TO STRANGLE YOU IF YOU DON'T FUCKING KICKBOOT YOUR DNS SERVERS FOR MY CENTRAL OFFICE, SO HELP ME ROBERT ANTON WILSON I'M GETTING UP AND PUTTING ON MY ASSKICKING BOOTS AND WALKING OUT THAT DOOR RIGHT N.." "Oh, hey, our DNS servers need a cache flush, hang on." "Thank you. *click*"

Err, sorry. Yeah. The customer service was sheer hate. The actual service was ok, but god help you if you have a problem. Good customer service is worth the price if you can afford it, and it's nice to go with local providers if you can afford it, too. Helps diversify the genepool. Indie ISPs seem to be less likely to just keel over and play dead for any two-bit lawyer waving a DCMA request, too, if that sort of thing matters to you.

Yahoo and YahooDSL? I think it should be self evident they love the taste of lawyer crotch.

I got that too. I used to have cable but the service sucked, outages all the time. I've only had a few outages with over the past 2 years or so and they only last about a minute or so. That $20 bucks a month won't last too long, trust me.

well, they say it'll last a year anyway. The DSL provider I'm using now (sonic, in case you're wondering) actually uses SBC (AT&T?) lines so I guess what I'm paying the extra for is the customer service. I think I'll risk it.
